OSRS Ranged Tank Guide: Quests, Training & Gear

OSRS Ranged Tank Guide: Quests, Training & Gear

A Ranged Tank account aims to have the lowest possible combat level while maintaining high Ranged and Magic stats. In this guide, we'll learn how to build a Ranged Tank account from scratch, covering everything from quests and diaries to the skills you'll need to level up in the most optimal and easiest way to create a powerful account that few dare to build for PKing and dominating the Bounty Hunter.

The Ideal Ranged Tank Stats

Ideally, these types of accounts shouldn't exceed 100 Combat Level. Once they go above this level, you'll mostly be fighting mains instead of pures and zerkers, which will obviously make getting kills more difficult. To stay around Combat Level 98–100, you need to be careful. The goal is to maximize your damage while minimizing "useless" combat stats for this build, like Attack and Strength.

  •   Ranged: 99 (Your primary source of damage).
  •   Magic: 94+ (Essential for Vengeance).
  •   Prayer: 77 (Unlocks Rigour)
  •   Defence: 75 (For tank gear like Elysian or Armadyl)
  •   Attack/Strength: Quest-only (~40–50). Do not train these manually!

Leveling up all your skills and completing quests can take hundreds of hours. If you'd like to skip all the hard work, our professional team can help. Check out our OSRS Services page for all the services that we offer. We also sell premade unrecoverable OSRS accounts, which you can buy directly and skip an enormous part of the grind with.

Early Game Training

Once your early questing is done, it’s time to power-level and quest.

Ranged Training (1-45)

  • Sand Crabs AFK: Use all the Shortbows until you can use the Magic Shortbow (i) and stick to it with Amethyst arrows at Sand Crabs. Leveling up Ranged before starting other things is better because it will make things easier later.

Magic Training (1-62)

  • Splash: Train from level 1 splashing to level 50-70 to be able to proceed to better places to train, such as Bursting in MM2 tunnels, as it is one of the places where you can gain XP faster.

Minigame and Diaries

There are several minigames and diaries you need to complete to get the most out of your Ranged Tank account. Below is a list of untradeable items that we recommend obtaining before continuing to train, as they will help you in the process, such as:

  • Full Void Set (3 helms)

To obtain a full set of Void armor, we require 1250 points, and 1650 points if we want to use the Void Elite armor with the completed Western Diaries. However, we could subtract the Melee Helm, since there's no need to buy it, reducing the cost by 200 points.

  • Quiver

It is obtained by defeating Sol Heredit in the Fortis Colosseum. If you require our services to obtain your Quiver, check out this page here.

  • Ava's assembler

An Ava's Assembler is obtained by using a Vorkath's Head on an Ava's Attractor. A Vorkath's Head is obtained by killing Vorkath; it has a drop rate of 1/50.

  • Hard Western Diary

These diaries are necessary to unlock the ability to obtain Elite Void Equipment for 200 extra points per piece (400 points total). Although they require several skills, they are truly worthwhile for the boost they provide in the end.

Money Madness 2 and Dragon Slayer 2

A Ranged Tank account can't be considered good if it hasn't completed two essential quests: Monkey Madness 2 and Dragon Slayer 2. I recommend using the RuneLite Quest Helper plugin, as it will show you all the requirements your specific account is missing, so it will be different for everyone.
One of the most difficult requirements for completing either of these two quests is reaching 200 quest points, so we'll focus on achieving this first (Barrow Gloves). Once we have all these quests completed, we'll also have several boosted skills thanks to the rewards we earn along the way.

Let's first complete RFD, the quest that gives you the Barrow Gloves. Follow our Efficient Guide to obtain Barrow Gloves. Once you've completed it, you'll be very close to 200 quest points, and from there you'll just need to complete a few more quests.

These are the mandatory quests required by Dragon Slayer 2 and Monkey Madness 2, so you can use them as a starting guide. Once you have them all completed, see how many quest points you're missing and finish them off with quests that have high quest point rewards. Remember that all these quests will require you to kill bosses or fight several NPCs. Always prioritize using Ranged/Magic and never use Melee. The idea is to keep this as low as possible and only gain combat EXP when it's necessary.

Lategame Training

Having these 2 quests completed will allow us to access the fastest EXP in Ranged and Magic.

Prayer Training (1-77 Best Bones)

  • Gilded/Chaos altar: There are two ways to train: the relaxed way, and the way that requires paying close attention and keeping an eye out for PKers. Do this untill 77 Prayer.

Ranged Training (45-99)

  • 69 Slayer: Since you need to level up 69 Slayer as a prerequisite for the quests, we recommend leveling up Ranged this way. Simply complete the Dwarf Cannon quest, and you can use your cannon and ranged gear to kill the NPCs your slayer master assigns you. Later, when you want to speed up the process, you can use methods like chinning.
  • Chinning: When you finish Monkey Madness 2 (see below), head to the MM2 Tunnels with Red or Black Chinchompas. This is the fastest XP in the game, allowing you to hit 99 in just a few days.

This article has much more to cover. Check our detailed OSRS Chinning guide

You can also combine these combat styles to raise your defense simultaneously, bringing it up to 75. After that, say goodbye to that skill, as it will be the last time you gain any EXP on it.

Magic Training (62-99)

  • Bursting/Barraging: Train Magic alongside Ranged in the MM2 Tunnels to hit 94+ Magic efficiently.

This article has much more to cover. Check our detailed OSRS Ice Bursting guide
