The Firemaking skill is fairly quick to train, It can be trained by lighting fires and other objects or through minigames like the Shades of Mort’ton or by fighting the Wintertodt boss. Firemaking gives players the ability to light different tiers of logs. Better tiers of logs are unlocked as a player’s firemaking level goes up, allowing them to get better experience rates.
These quests should be completed to get the best experience rates when starting; they have little to no requirements and can be completed quickly.
The Giant Dwarf: this quest gives 1,500 firemaking experience. It requires 16 firemaking, 12 crafting, 33 magic, and 14 thieving.
Enlightened Journey: this quest gives 4,000 firemaking experience. It requires 20 firemaking, 20 quest points, 30 farming, and 36 crafting.
Other quests, such as Heroes' Quest, Making Friends with My Arm, and Enakhra's Lament, have more requirements but award firemaking experience upon completion, so if you have the requirements, you should complete them to get the best experience rates when starting.
Burning logs is the fastest method of training firemaking in OSRS. When starting, it takes longer for players to burn one log, but as their firemaking level goes up, they will be able to burn logs much faster, which increases their experience rates. Lighting logs can be timed correctly to allow players to move to another square in between lighting the logs, allowing them to burn logs in any formation they want.
If this method is done quickly and with accurate clicks, players can keep lighting logs tick-perfectly every 4 ticks. Burning logs can also be done easily by lighting the log in a row from east to west at the Grand Exchange or the location south of the Varrock west bank.
Up to 1485 logs can be burned per hour if done correctly, here are the experience rates to expect when burning different types of logs:
At Level 1, Burn blue logs, this gives 74,000 experience per hour
At Level 35, Burn Teak logs, this gives 138,000 experience per hour
At Level 42, Burn Arctic logs, this gives 185,000 experience per hour
At Level 45, Burn Maple logs, this gives 200,000 experience per hour
At Level 50, Burn Mahogany logs, this gives 230,000 experience per hour
At Level 60, Burn Yew logs, this gives 300,000 experience per hour
At Level 75, Burn Magic logs, this gives 450,000 experience per hour
At Level 90, Burn Redwood logs, this gives 519,000 experience per hour
Burning logs can be quite expensive when they are burned since they turn into ashes which sell for a cheap price at the grand exchange. Here are the costs of burning logs to 99 firemaking
Burning Blue logs costs 309,320 GP per hour
Burning Teak logs costs 360,000 GP per hour
Burning Arctic logs costs 677,100 GP per hour
Burning Maple logs costs 20,000 GP per hour
Burning Mahogany logs costs 733,700 GP per hour
Burning Yew logs cost 420,000 GP per hour
Burning Magic logs costs 1,551,330 GP per hour
Burning Redwood logs costs 825,210 GP per hour
In total, burning logs from level 1 to 99 firemaking costs around 28.5M GP
Fighting the Wintertodt is one of the best alternatives for training firemaking. It gives good experience rates in firemaking and offers construction, fletching, and woodcutting experience. Players can also get different rewards for subduing the Wintertodt which is quite useful for Ironman accounts. Although similar to a minigame, fighting the Wintertodt is a boss fight, and dying would result in the loss of items and account status.
The mechanics of the fight are quite simple and are thoroughly explained in our Wintertodt guide. It will show you everything you need to get the best experience rates and rewards when fighting the Wintertodt.
50 Firemaking
Warm clothing: this is necessary to reduce the damage from Wintertodt
Food: irrespective of your stats, Wintertodt will damage you, so food is required.
You should anticipate the experience rates indicated below if you choose the quickest experience technique and only fletch when necessary:
These are the experience rates you may anticipate if you fletch the majority of the Bruma roots to 99:
Not only is Wintertodt a good alternative based on the experience rates, but it is also quite profitable. Players can get logs, Dragon axe, gems, ores, herbs, seeds, fish, and other rewards from subduing the Wintertodt. Based on grand exchange prices, the rewards turn into a profit of 200,000 GP every hour.
Creating Pyre logs is a profitable method of training firemaking and has no requirements. It can be done by simply using sacred oil on logs; this action has no in-game delay and as a result the creating speed is the same as the click speed, which is why creating Pyre logs is click intensive when trying to maintain optimal experience rates. Using this method is not sustainable due to the click intensity, so players are advised to use this method until 50 firemaking and then use other methods to continue training above that level.
Tip: To get better experience rates, players should always use a sacred oil (4) on logs, even if they require less than 4 doses. Only the required dose of Sacred oil will be used, but the player will get more than a 50% increase in experience rate.
Completion of the Shades of Mort’ton quest
Your accuracy, click speed and the type of pyre logs you make determine experience rates when creating Pyre logs. Here are the experience rates to expect when making different types of Pyre logs:
When making Regular Pyre, players should expect experience rates of 26,875 per hour.
When making Oak Pyre, players should expect experience rates of 27,000 per hour.
When making Willow, Teak, Arctic, Maple, or Mahogany Pyre, players should expect experience rates of 33,000 per hour.
When making Yew, Magic, or Redwood Pyre, players should expect experience rates of 43,000 per hour.
The cost or profit from creating pyre logs depends on the type of pyre log created. Here are the costs of making different pyre logs
Players who want to train their firemaking with minimal effort can burn logs on Forester’s campfire, however, it is quite expensive. A forester’s campfire is a fire that can be created by using logs on an existing fire, this is an alternative method of burning logs that grants only one-third of the firemaking experience from burning the logs with the method above.
The best location to set up a Forester’s campfire for training firemaking is close to a bank so that more logs can be quickly obtained. Examples of these locations are grand exchange, Rogues’ Den, and the crafting guild. Players can start to burn logs on a campfire at any firemaking level.
Here are the experience rates to expect when burning logs on a campfire:
The costs below might be similar to burning logs with the method above. However, the experience rates from burning logs on a campfire are much lower, therefore players would spend even more when training with this method.
