OSRS Splashing Guide For F2P & P2P: AFK Magic Training

OSRS Splashing Guide For F2P & P2P: AFK Magic Training

Splashing is a method of training magic in which you continuously cast magic attack spells on enemies through auto-retrieve without damaging them, allowing you to be afk for very long periods of time, and since the spell is auto-cast, you will gain xp from it. This is accomplished by wearing equipment that provides a negative magic attack bonus.

Splashing is one of the most AFK training methods in OSRS, letting you train Magic with minimal attention. While many players dismiss it as “lazy training,” it’s still one of the easiest ways to push to 99 Magic without risking or putting much effort into it. This guide covers what splashing is, gear setups for F2P & P2P, XP, gears, rates & costs, and the best locations.

What is Splashing?

Splashing is a method where you deliberately lower your Magic attack bonus to -64 or lower, making it impossible to ever land a hit on an enemy.

Unlike melee or ranged, Magic grants XP even on 0s, meaning you’ll continue gaining experience with every cast.

  • Each combat engagement lasts up to 20 minutes before auto-retaliate stops, requiring only one click every 20 minutes to reset.
  • It’s completely AFK, safe, and simple — perfect for long training sessions.

Splashing Gear Setup

To always splash, you need at least -64 magic bonus. If you have more than -63, your magic will eventually hit a damange and kill the NPC, which will prevent you from AFKing. Another good tip is to splash level 1 monsters, as they will always hit you 0 times and won't kill you, which will stop the AFK session.

F2P Gear Setup

  • Full Metal Armor (bronze → rune) – helm, platebody, platelegs, and kiteshield.

Staff Options

  • 40 Ranged: Equip green d’hide vambraces + an elemental staff (e.g., staff of fire/air) for infinite runes.

  • No 40 Ranged: Use the Cursed Goblin Staff from Dango in Draynor Village (lets you autocast, but no rune savings).

This setup ensures you reach the required negative Magic attack bonus (-64) while being able to autocast.

  Cursed goblin staff

This staff is popular among players who splash because it does not provide the magic attack bonus that elemental staves do. It can be purchased from Diango in Draynor village, who sells toys and other commemorative items. If you wear this staff, your total cost will rise because you won't be able to use the elemental staff to save runes.

Note: If you have the highest defense, you can upgrade your armor, for example, to a full rune, which will give you more defense bonuses, and you will be able to attack a greater variety of monsters when AFKing.

P2P Gear Setup

Members have more flexibility and better rune-saving options

  • Armor: Same as F2P (plate armor + kite shield).
  • Staves
    • Combination Staves (mist, dust, smoke): These replace two rune types at once.
    • Example: Smoke battlestaff lets you cast fire spells using only chaos runes.

  • Alternatives: Granite shield + fighter torso if you don’t have 40 Ranged.
  • Best-in-slot splashing option (if rich): Harmonised nightmare staff (~400m) for the highest XP/hr.

XP Rates & GP Costs

Here are the key spells commonly used for splashing, with XP/hr and GP/XP:

Spell

Req. Level

XP/hr

GP/XP (w/ rune-saving staff)

Notes

Wind Strike

1

~12k

1 GP/XP

Start here until 13 Magic.

Fire Strike

13

~13.8k

1.23 GP/XP

Best GP: XP ratio. Many players splash this all the way to 99.

Fire Bolt

35

~27k

4.5–6 GP/XP

Faster but costlier.

Fire Blast

59

~41k

5–6 GP/XP

Solid XP with manageable cost.

Fire Wave

75

~51k

~7 GP/XP

Expensive, but efficient.

Fire Surge

95

~60k

~6.4–8 GP/XP

Fastest spell to 99.

Pro Tip: Always use Fire spells. They offer the best balance between XP/hr and rune cost, and with a Smoke battlestaff, you only consume chaos runes.

Best Splashing Locations

You need monsters that won’t kill you, but stay engaged indefinitely:

  • F2P
    • Seagulls at Port Sarim — high amount of low-level targets.
    • EdgevilleNorthh — low-level targets.
  • P2P
    • Similar to F2P, but you can also splash on weaker monsters in various zones.
    • Castle Wars: Splash on a friend or alt account during matches to AFK while farming Castle Wars tickets. (~8 tickets/hr if you score first).

Cost vs. Efficiency

  • Fire Strike: Cheapest per XP (great for Ironmen or budget players).
  • Fire Blast / Fire Wave: Best balance for mains who want reasonable XP/hr.
  • Fire Surge: Highest XP/hr (~60k/hr) but expensive.

Note: If you plan on splashing long-term, invest in a smoke battlestaff. It will pay for itself in rune savings.

Spells for Splashing

When splashing, it is recommended to use the first tier of spells, the strike spells, which are wind strike, water strike, earth strike, and fire strike, because they are cost-effective, but if you want better rates, you must spend more GP to use spells like fire blast and fire wave. Here is a list of popular magic attack spells used for splashing.

Note: The cost above is calculated when using elemental staves and would be higher without them.

  1. Wind strike: This spell requires only one magic, one air rune, and one mind rune to cast, and it costs 6 gp per cast.
  2. Water strike: It requires level 5 magic to cast, uses only one air, one water, and one earth rune, and costs 10 gp per cast.
  3. Earth strike: It requires 9 magic to cast, you only need 1 air rune, 2 earth runes, and 1 chaos rune per cast, and it costs 14 gp per cast.
  4. Fire strike: It requires level 13 magic to cast, as well as two air runes, three fire runes, and one chaos rune per cast, and it costs 22 gp per cast at the Grand Exchange's current prices.
  5. Fire bolt: It requires 35 magic to cast and requires 3 air runes, 4 fire runes, and 1 chaos rune. It costs 106 gp to cast.
  6. Fire blast: it requires 59 magic to cast and requires 4 air runes, 5 fire runes, and 1 death rune per cast. It costs 172 gp per cast.
  7. Fire wave: it requires 75 magic to cast and requires 5 air runes, 7 fire runes, and 1 blood rune to cast and costs 245 gp per cast.
  8. Fire Surge: it requires 95 magic to cast and requires 7 air runes, 10 fire runes, and 1 wrath rune. It is the most expensive spell to splash with in the standard spellbook and costs about 303 gp.

How long does it take to splash till level 99?

You can splash with any attack spell from both standard and ancient spellbooks, but the ones listed above show the quickest and most cost-effective method to follow; if you splash all the way to 99 using the method above, you should expect to spend about 60M gp and get to 99 in around 252 hours.

However, if you are F2P, you must use the fire blast from 59 magic until 99, which will cost around 52M gp and take 319 hours to complete.

If you choose to spend less and stick to low-level magic attacks, here is how long 99 will take using different attacks and elemental staves.

  • Using Air Strike will take about 1975 hours and cost about 7.2 million GP.
  • Using a Water strike will take about 1446.9 hours and cost 5.2 million GP
  • Using  Earth Strike will take about 1142.3 hours and cost about 4.2 million GP
  • Using a Fire Strike will take  about  943.6 hours and cost 3.4 million GP
  • Using Firebolt will take about 482.8 hours and cost about 28.9 million GP

Best Monsters for splashing

Rats

Rats are one of the most common animals found throughout Gielior. They are also popular among players who splash due to their low combat level and inability to hit; they have a combat level of one and a maximum hit of zero.

F2P\P2P Locations of rats

  1. Ferox enclave
  2. Lumbridge’
  3. Varrock
  4. Rimmington
  5. Draynor sewers
  6. Draynor Manor basement

Seagull

Seagulls are just as weak as rats and also have zero max hit and a negative defence bonus; they are quite popular for splashing and for beginners.

F2P locations of Seagulls

  1. Corsair Cove
  2. Port Sarim

P2P locations of Seagulls

  1. Port Piscarilius
  2. Runes of Unkah
  3. Uzer Oasis
  4. The Node

  Spider

Spiders are also very low-level animals that are ideal for splashing. You should splash the level 1 variant, as the level 24 variant can hit up to 6 damage. The level 1 spiders have a significantly slower attack speed and are less aggressive.

F2P locations of spiders

  1. Varrock sewers: There are about 9 spawns in this area.
  2. Draynor Manor: There are 4 spawns in this location
  3. Lumbridge castle
  4. Wilderness

P2P locations of Spiders are

  1. Lovakengj.
  2. Gnome maze
  3. Sisterhood Sanctuary
  4. Ogre enclave.

Conclusion

Some players view the splashing method as disrespectful or less honourable, while on the other hand, there are players who see it as a compliment to continue training when real life arrives with its responsibilities.

Previously, players could splash for hours on end without being interrupted. However, several updates have limited how far you can stay away from the screen while splashing, but splashing is still the most afk way to train magic, and you can even watch movies or play other games while this is running in background.
