OSRS Giants' Foundry Guide: Best Strategy & Rewards

OSRS Giants' Foundry Guide: Best Strategy & Rewards

Giants’ Foundry is a smithing minigame where players are assigned to create giant weapons for Kovac. This minigame is quite profitable and also gives decent smithing experience rates, It involves using various bar kinds to create liquid metal, which must then go through several refinement steps before it can be turned into a giant sword based on Kovac’s description.

Location of the Giants’ Foundry

Location of the Giants’ Foundry

The Giants’ foundry is located in a cave underneath the Giants’ Plateau. Here are the fastest ways to get there:

  • The grouping teleport
  • Amulet of Glory: Players can teleport to Al Kharid Palace using the Amulet of Glory and then run to the location shown above.
  • Ring of dueling: Players can teleport to the Emir’s Arena using this ring and then make their way to the Giant Foundry
  • Gnome glider flight to Kar-Hewo
  • Tollgate from Lumbridge

Requirement for the Giant’s Foundry

Completion of the Giants’ foundry quest.

How to play the Giants’ Foundry

During the Giants’ Foundry quest, players will get an idea of how to play the minigame, However, for players to get better and play the Giants’ Foundry optimally, here is a detailed breakdown:

Setting up the Mould

Firstly, players must pick up a commission from Kovac which would be random each time but they can be cancelled by speaking to him again. The mould should be set based on Kovac’s commission. The commission describes the features of the blade the player has to make to get Kovac’s approval. For instance, when Kovac assigns the player to make a sword that is broad and spiked, the player has to choose these features when setting up the sword in the Giants’ foundry Mould setup The closer the match, the higher quality of the sword when the player starts forging.

Then, the crucible should be filled with the right liquid metal. Only metal bars or metal items can be used to fill the crucible, different metal bars represent different quantities of metal bars and only a maximum of 28 standard metal bars can be accepted by the crucible, If the player attempts to insert more items worth more bars than the crucible has space for, they will be warned that excess metal will be destroyed into the crucible. Metal in the crucible can be removed if incorrect items are placed there however, this will destroy all metal inside.

Pouring molten bars in giants' foundry

When the crucible has been filled, the molten metal should be poured into the mould. Ensure that another preform is not on the mould or else you won’t be able to pour the molten metal.

Shaping of the Preform

Shaping of the preform involves the refinement processes that should be done to the preform to convert it into a giant’s sword. The higher the tier of metal the player chooses, the more processes the preform must undergo before it turns into the sword and the temperature will also have to be regulated more carefully.

Giant foundry HUD

The right tool should be used at the right temperature to ensure that the sword’s completion to 100%. This can be tracked using the in-game HUD shown above. Players should use the arrow and the white border to tell which temperature/progress the preform is currently on. The background colour of each process shows the correct temperature the preform should have before being used on that machine. Using the incorrect tool or using a tool when the preform is outside the correct temperature range will cause damage to the sword and reduce its quality. If this happens too often and the quality of the sword reaches 0, the player has to hand it over to Kovac and try again.

Here are the tools found in the giant’s foundry

tools in the giants' foundry

trip hammerTrip hammer: This is usually the first tool that would be used when making most swords as it requires the sword to be red hot, Every 5th tick, the sword gains 2% progress and cools down by 2.5% when used on the trip hammer.

GrindstoneGrindstone: The sword must be at a medium temperature before this tool can used. It grinds out the edges of the sword to make it smooth. Every 2nd tick, the sword gains 1% progress and heals up by 1%.

Polishing wheelPolishing wheel: The player has to cool down the sword to a cold temperature as indicated by the refinement HUD before using this tool. The polishing wheel cleans up the blade and with every 2nd tick, the sword gains 1% progress and cools down by 1.7%.

Lava-pool: The sword should be dipped into the lava to heat it enough for any tool. The player can left-click do a regular “heat-preform”, this heats the sword at a slower pace which increases with time if uninterrupted. The “Dunk-preform” heats the preform at a faster rate which also increases over time, until interrupted.

Waterfall: The waterfall shown above shows the location where players can cool their swords. Similar to the lava pool, players have two options, The first is to perform a regular cool-preform which cools the preform at a slower rate which also increases over time if uninterrupted. Players can also do a Quench-preform: this cools the perform at a faster rate which increases over time if uninterrupted.

Preform Storage: The preform storage is a storage area where players can store their preform if they want to pause their refinement process for any reason. This would maintain the progress the player has made in the refinement of the preform and also the heat level until it is picked up again.

Delivering the Sword to Kovac

Players can deliver the sword to Kovac if they can reach 100% completion without ruining the sword. In return, Kovac restores the player’s run energy by 50% and will reward the player with a sum of smithing experience, coins, and foundry reputation. Foundry reputation can be used to unlock several unique items from Giant’s Foundry reward store. The higher the quality of the sword, the greater the rewards the player will receive. The gold will deposited directly into the player’s bank but Ultimate Ironmen will get the gold reward directly into their inventory.

The Quality of the Sword

The Sword quality is equal to the metal score plus the mould score. The experience a player gets from making a sword depends on the sword’s quality. The sword’s quality also determines the difficulty of making the sword.

Metal score

The metal scores for different metals and alloys are shown below, the difficulty level of making the sword with those metals is shown below as well

At 15 smithing, If the player uses all bronze, this will lead to a score of 10. The difficulty level is at its lowest

At 15 smithing, If the player uses all iron bars, this will lead to a score of 20. The difficulty level is low.

At 30 smithing, If the player uses all steel bars this will lead to a score of 30. The difficulty level is low

At 50 smithing, If the player uses all mithril bars, this will lead to a score of 40. The difficulty level is low

At 70 smithing, If the player uses all adamant bars, this will lead to a score of 50. The difficulty level is low

At 85 smithing, If the player uses all rune bars, this will lead to a score of 60. The difficulty level is medium.

At 50 smithing, If the player uses 19 steel / 9 mithril, this will lead to a score of 59. The difficulty level is low

At 70 smithing, If the player uses 18 mithril / 10 adamant, this will lead to a score of 89. The difficulty level is medium

At 85 smithing, If the player uses 19 adamant bars / 9 rune bars, this will lead to a score of 118. The difficulty level is high

At 85 smithing, If the player uses 14 adamant bars / 14 rune bars, this will lead to a score of 130. The difficulty level is its highest.

Mould Score

The mould score is an addition of the bonuses for the two styles in your commission. The best mould combinations as shown below should be used to improve your experience rates.
