OSRS Iron Dragon Guide: Locations, Safespots & Gear

Iron Dragons are the second weakest of the six types of metal Dragons. They have a combat level of 189 or 215 when in the Catacombs of Kourend. Nieve, Konar, and Duradel can assign Iron Dragons as a Slayer task. While they are relatively easy to kill, they take longer and provide lower Slayer XP, particularly for players with low combat stats. However, a cannonable area is available for faster kills, though it can be costly due to Iron Dragons' few valuable drops. 

With the completion of the elite Karamja diary, Bronze dragons and other metal dragons will drop their respective bars in noted form if toggled on through Pirate Jackie the Fruit.

Locations of Iron Dragons

Iron Dragons can be found in the following locations:

Brimhaven Dungeon 

The Brimhaven Dungeon has 21 Iron Dragon spawns. 13 Iron Dragons spawn in the task-only area, and 8 Iron Dragons in the regular Dungeon. The fastest methods to this location are:

• Through teleport to House if the POH is in Brimhaven.
• Tai Bwo Wannai teleport scroll.
• Spirit tree.
• Amulet of glory to Karamja
• fairy code CKR
• Teleport to Ardougne and take a boat to Brimhaven for 30 GP.

Catacombs of Kourend

This area has 2 Iron Dragon spawns. The fastest methods to this location are:

• Through the portal in the portal chamber or nexus in a POH attuned to Kourend castle
• Hosidius page in Kharedst’s memoirs
• Skills necklace to woodcutting guild then run north
• Take the boat with Veos to Port Piscarilius then run west

Isle of Souls Dungeon

3 Iron Dragon spawns in this area. The Dungeon can be reached by using the fairy ring code BJP which takes players to the northern coast of the isle. Alternatively, players can exit the Soul Wars Lobby south and head northeast to the Dungeon.

Iron Dragons’ Attacks

The Iron Dragons have 2 attacks

• Melee attack:  Iron Dragons can attack players with a slash melee attack which has a max hit of 17. Protect from melee prevents damage from this attack.
• Dragonfire attack: Like other Dragons, Iron Dragons can attack players with a Dragon fire attack. Its Dragonfire attack has a longer range and can hit players up to 50 damage if no protection is used. Damage can be fully prevented by using super or extended antifire potion without the need for a dragonfire shield. Note that protect from Magic provides no protection against the dragonfire from the Iron dragon and other metallic dragons.

Strategy for Iron Dragon

Before starting the fight, drink a dose of combat boosting and antifire potion. If using melee, turn on protect from melee, set the attack style to stab and attack the Iron Dragon. Keep an eye on the chatbox or timer if using runelite to know when the antifire potion will expire so you can drink another dose. If using ranged, you don’t need to use any protection prayers. Only ensure you are protected from the Dragonfire and attack the Iron Dragons from a distance, avoiding its melee attack. Players can use a cannon against the Iron Dragons in the Catacoumbs of Kourend. Placing it in the center of their spawn points will yield the best results.
