Red Chinchompas are a one-handed, stackable ranged weapon known for their ability to hit multiple targets at once. They’re incredibly popular among players aiming for high ranged XP rates. This demand keeps their prices strong on the Grand Exchange, making hunting Red Chinchompas a highly profitable activity.
Completion of Hard Western Provinces Diary for the Red Chinchompa hunting ground.
This is the best place to catch them as 9 closely-packed Red Chinchompas spawns are in this area. However, it becomes available after the completion of the Song of the Elves, which has many requirements and is quite difficult. The fastest method to get here is from Prifddinas; leave through the northern gates. Go north and then turn east underneath the rope bridge.
This is the second-best location to catch Red Chinchompas. But it becomes available after the completion of the Hard Western Provinces diary. It has 15 chinchompa spawns, so shooting them (explained below) becomes unnecessary. It is located south of the Feldip Hills and here are the fastest methods to get here:
11 red Chinchompas spawns are scattered around the Feldip Hunter area, a popular hunter training area filled with different creatures. The fastest ways to get to here are:
First, find a free spot in one of the hunting areas mentioned above. This might be a bit difficult at first, but when you find one, there is a low chance of other players crashing you.
Proper box trap placement is key to maximizing your catch rate. Set your traps around where Red Chinchompas spawn at the hunting spot for the best results. Once a chin gets caught in the trap, right-click the trap and select "reset" to put the red chin in your inventory and set a new trap. RuneLite will show how long these traps stay active, when they catch a red chin or if they fail by highlighting them with different colours (red - fail, green - success and orange - active)
After placing the traps in the right positions where the Red chins spawn, shoot the red chins that stray away from your traps or don’t get caught with a ranged weapon to improve XP rates. They will respawn and hopefully get caught in the trap this time, but if not, you might have to shoot them again. Red Chinchompas sometimes retrace back to their spawn location, so give them some time before shooting. They have only 1 hitpoint and will die with one hit, so doing this will not reduce your efficiency. Bring mithril darts or a magic shortbow with bronze arrows if you want to use this method.
Tick manipulation adds a few extra clicks to do an action, but it saves the player a considerable amount of time. Using tick manipulation saves one game tick (0.6 seconds) anytime you set a trap. This might seem little, but it adds up over time, saving you between 3 and 5 minutes every hour you catch chins. This saves you several hours when training from level 80 to 99 hunter.
There are different items for tick manipulation. Guam and tar with pestle and motar works perfectly. Use the Guam on tar with a pestle and mortar in your inventory then click the box trap to lay it after. This reduces the animation of setting the trap, saving you one game tick (0.6 seconds).
Tile markers in RuneLite can be quite helpful as you can use them to mark the best positions to lay your box traps, allowing you to accurately lay them on the Red Chinchompa spawns.
The tiles marked above are on the western part of the red chinchompa hunting ground. These are the best tiles to lay box traps in that area.
Each red Chin catch gives 265 Hunter XP. Here are the XP rates to expect for different Hunter levels.
The GP per hour or catch rate players can get depends on their speed, the location where they catch the red chins, and most importantly, their hunter level. The chance of a successful catch is approximately 115/255 at 63 and 228/255 at level 99. Overall, you should expect the rates below at different hunter levels.
This is usually pure profit, as the only cost might be a few hundred Bronze arrows to attract Red Chins.
