Rune Dragons are metal Dragons first encountered during Dragon Slayer II, where the player must fight one. After completing the quest, they can be found in the eastern chamber of the Lithren Vault, opposite the Adamant Dragons. They have a combat level of 380, higher than that of Adamant dragons, but they are comparatively easier to kill.
Rune Dragons can also be assigned as a Slayer task and are considered good tasks since they can be completed quickly and have valuable drops.
5 Rune Dragons spawns can be found in the Lithren Vault, a facility located in the ruins of a dragonkin castle on Lithkren.
The fastest way to get to the Lithren Vault is by using the Digsite pendant teleport. Before completing Dragon Slayer II, follow the following steps to the Lithren Vault:
After the completion of Dragon Slayer II, use the digsite pendant on the Strange Machine in Lithkren Vault, north of the rune dragons, to unlock the teleport. Afterward, use the teleport on the digsite pendant to teleport directly to the Lithkren vault.

Similar to the Mithril and Adamant Dragons, Rune Dragons have multiple attacks, consisting of melee, ranged, and magic attacks, as well as 2 special attacks. The Rune Dragon’s melee and magic attack have a max hit of 31 while the ranged attack can hit up to 40 damage and Dragonfire can deal up to 50.
Rune Dragon’s first special attack consists of 2 small electric bolts launched at the player’s position which hones in on them if they are hit. It deals 4-7 damage per tick for a few seconds, reduced to 1-2 if the player wears insulated boot. Players should avoid the attack by running four to five tiles away from their original position when the attack was launched.
This is a ranged attack that can hit through Protect from Missiles. The Rune dragon will heal itself for 100% of the damage dealt to the player from this attack.
Rune Dragons are weak to magic and stab, so players should use any of these attack styles to deal the most damage.
Killing Rune Dragons is quite straightforward. If using melee, pray against magic and use piety. You should equip the insulated boots as they will allow you to be AFK for longer periods before needing food.
If using mage, Turn on protect from missiles and use Tumenken’s shadow. This is the most effective weapon for killing Rune Dragons across all styles, since they have relatively low Magic defence. Alternatively, players should use Earth spells.
Players who prefer to use ranged against the Rune Dragons should use Protect from missiles due to the Dragon’s accurate ranged attacks and also pray Rigour or Eagle eye. Players with 90+ ranged and a dragon hunter crossbow can easily kill Rune Dragons due to the weapon’s passive effect.
Many players kill Rune Dragons on an alt account since they are AFK and consistently give valuable drops. To do this, you should use insulated boots so you don’t have to move away from their Electric bolts special attack. With the boots equipped, the attack deals only 1-2 damage per tick, allowing for longer AFK peroids.
Players can kill 45 Rune Dragons per hour; 9 kills per trip and 5 trips per hour. This results in a profit of 1.4M GP after the food, teleports and potions have been deducted. At lower levels and equipment, players should expect 33-38 kills per hour, reducing profits significantly.
The average Drop from Rune Dragons is worth 37K GP.
