OSRS Yama Boss Guide: Strategy, Gear Setup & Rewards

Yama is a powerful group boss located in the Chasm of Fire and is one of the most challenging encounters in Old School RuneScape. This guide covers how to get there, the best gear setups, combat strategy, and the loot you can expect.

To take on Yama effectively, here are the minimum-recommended stats and equipment:

  • Magic_icon.png?334cf Magic: 82+ (to use Dark Demonbane)
  •  Attack_icon.png?b4bce Attack: 80+
  •  Monster strength bonus Strength: 80+
  •  Defence_icon.png?ca0cd Defence: 75+

How to Get to Yama

To fight Yama, you need access to the Chasm of Fire in the Wilderness. Here are the best ways to get there:

  • Dramen_staff.png?5eb13 Fairy Ring Code: DJR – Teleports you directly near the Chasm of Fire. You can find a full guide about fairy ring code locations here.
  •  Book_of_the_dead.png?9ae5a Book of the Dead teleport – Use the "History and Hearsay" spell and run northwest.

Note: You must have completed A Kingdom Divided to access the area and use fairy rings freely

Entering the Boss Room

Once at the Chasm of Fire:

If using a Chasm Teleport Scroll, you'll arrive directly in front of the Voice of Yama, near the boss entry point.

If arriving via other methods mentioned above:

Enter the Chasm entrance near the center of the area.

Players with 73 Agility can take the high route by running north to the cliff edge (marked with a climbing icon), hanging down, jumping across two gaps to the east, and using the gibbet to the northeast to reach the bottom floor quickly.

Players with 83 Agility can instead use the chain right next to the entry point to slide directly to the lower floor, arriving near the Voice of Yama.

Navigate to the Judge’s Rift and right-click the designated NPC and select “Enter Yama.”

Make sure you're fully prepared before entering the arena—Yama is a high-intensity, multi-phase boss with dangerous mechanics and no bank access inside.

Fight Strategy

Yama consists of several phases and special mechanics that require attention and coordination:

When you attack with magic, you'll see flames reflected in Yama's hands and surrounding your character.

When you attack with ranged, you'll see a dark shadow reflected in Yama's hands and surrounding you.

Phase 1: Opening Mechanics

  • Swap protection prayers between Magic and Ranged.
  • Stand on the correct glyph colors to avoid major damage (Red = Magic; Purple: Ranged)
  • Yama is weak to slash, but magic can be just as effective with high-accuracy weapons like Tumeken’s shadow or the Purging Staff.

Yama has two special attacks in this phase, the shadows on the floor that are really easy to avoid, you just have to walk over them when they pass by you.

And the flames that will run through Yama's entire stage, you have to stand on the correct glyph so that they don't deal damage.

Phase 2: The Maze

  • Players are split up and must navigate an easy agility maze.
  • There isn't much to talk about here, the truth is it's very intuitive and simple, when you finish it the fight with Yama will continue.

Phase 3: Void Flares & Fireballs

  • Void Flares must be cleared using Purging Staff or similar special attacks.
  • Orb Summons spawn and heal Yama — assign one player to manage them.
  • Yama launches fireball spreads — sidestep perpendicular to dodge.

 Tips & Final Notes

  • Bring a friend: Duo fights make mechanics easier to manage.
  • Voice chat helps: Coordinate during phase switches and orb clears.
  • Practice the glyph colors: They’re key to surviving major attacks.
  • Always bring a quick teleport in case of an emergency.

Yama has 225 Defence and 250 Magic. His slash defence is 80, while his magic defence is -30. However, if the tank is using magic, Yama's magic defence can rise to 60. Other styles are ineffective due to extreme defence bonuses: 100+ stab, 333+ ranged, and 220+ crush.

During the final phase, his defences increase significantly: +135 stab, +108 slash, +449 crush/ranged, and +81 magic.

Mastering Yama takes practice and coordination, but once learned, it’s a profitable and rewarding challenge with some of the best mid-to-high-tier boss loot in OSRS.
