OSRS Zalcano Guide: Strategy, Gear Setup, Worlds & Drops

Zalcono is a demon located in a prison beneath Prifddinas, she is immune to regular combat and can only be attacked using skills. The skills needed are mining, smithing, and runecraft, these are used to create imbued tephra which can destroy Zalcano’s stone armour and make her vulnerable to the players’ attack As mentioned, regular combat does not work and players can only deal damage to Zalcano by mining her with the use of a pickaxe when she is vulnerable. Similar to wintertodt, players can fight Zalcano with other players, which makes it a lot easier.

Requirements for Fighting Zalcano

  • Since Zalcano is located in Priffdinas, Players must complete the Song of the Elves quest to access it.
  • 70 mining and 70 smithing are required to fight Zalcano, but higher levels in those skills along with runecrafting, and hitpoints (to withstand her attacks) are recommended. Protection prayers will not work when fighting Zalcano.

The required items include:

  • Food
  • A pickaxe
  • stamina potions are highly recommended.

Zalcano's Attacks

To fight Zalcano, players need to know her attacks and how to evade them, she has six different attacks that players must watch out for, all of which have been explained below

Stomp on the ground

Stomp on the ground attack from Zalcano

Zalcano can stomp on the ground and cause boulders to fall from the ceiling. These falling boulders can be spotted before they reach the ground by the falling pebbles or dirt and shadow on the ground, players should step at least one tile away from where they will land to avoid them. These attacks are very dangerous and can damage the player for 40+. If demonic symbols are summoned along with this, it becomes more difficult to know where the boulders are falling.

Demonic symbols

Blue Demonic symbol

Blue Demonic symbol Zalcano attack

The player’s damage would be increased by 50% while standing on a blue demonic symbol and attacking Zalcano with imbued tephra.

Orange Demonic symbol

Orange Demonic symbol Zalcano attack

Players should not stand or cross the orange demonic symbols, as it will damage them and reduce their run energy. They deal increasing damage every tick to a maximum of about 21 to 24, these can kill the player if they stand on it and are not paying enough attention.

Golem

Golem

Zalcano will summon a golem from the prison’s edge. Players should stop the golem from getting to her, or they will restore her armour’s health based on their health when they reach her, if it is at full health, it will restore 50 hitpoints to her. Players can damage the golem with the imbued tephra. If killed, the golem will drop 16 to 24 imbued tephra.

Red Ball Energy

Red Ball Energy

Zalcano can fire a red ball of energy at the glowing red formation, which will deactivate and change it. If the player is standing within 1 tile of the rock formation when this happens, they will take 21+ damage. Players can easily avoid this by walking away from the rock. Another rock formation will begin to glow when this happens.

Shock Wave

Zalcano will rise again a few seconds after she has been defeated, and a player has caused her damage. When she rises, she will create a shock wave that will push back, damage, and briefly stun any player that is standing next to her. The shock wave created will also destroy all the imbued tephra in the room. Players can avoid this by standing away from her before she rises again.

Small pebbles

The Zalcano will occasionally hit the players within the prison with several pebbles, there is no way to avoid this attack however, players will take only small damage from it.

Strategy for Fighting Zalcano

Zalcano's lair

First off, players have to make Imbued Tephra. This needs to be thrown at Zalcano to damage and remove her armour, when it is removed, the player can mine her to cause damage. Here are the steps to make imbued tephra

  • Mine the glowing rock formation in one of the corners, this will provide the player with tephra, the other rock formations also give tephra but at a significantly lesser rate. Players should stand close to the northeast corner when Zalcano spawns as it has the highest chance of glowing at the start, if it does not, then any other rock formation will glow. While mining, watch out for Zalcano’s red ball energy attack discussed above
  • After mining tephra, players can refine the Tephra into refined tephra using the furnace on the eastern side of the prison.
  • At the altar, as shown in the image, players can imbue the refined tephra to form imbued tephra which can then be used to attack Zalcano until her armour is depleted, and she becomes vulnerable. Players should stand in the blue demonic tile before attacking Zalcano as this allows the tephras to be used efficiently and eliminates the need to create more often.

Killing the Golem

The golem has been explained in the Zalcano’s attack section above, It should be ignored when the team is made up of more than 8 players, but in a lesser team, players should kill the golem by attacking it with the imbued tephras.

Mining/attacking the Zalcano

When Zalcano's armour has been destroyed, she will drop to the floor and become vulnerable to the players’ attacks. Players can damage Zalcano by mining. Ensure to not walk under her as this will cause you to get 7 damage per tick. Players can only mine Zalcano for 12 to 16 seconds, after which, her armour resets to 300 hipoints and a shock wave will be released, so beware.

The damage the player can cause depends on their mining level, as shown below:

  • At 1 to 74, mining Zalcano will damage her to a maximum of 30
  • At 75 to 84, mining Zalcano will damage her to a maximum of 31
  • At 85 to 94, mining Zalcano will damage her to a maximum of 32
  • At 95 to 104, mining Zalcano will damage her to a maximum of 33

Drops From Zalcano

To qualify for drops from Zalcano, players must inflict a minimum of 5 shield damage to the boss’s hitpoints. To be eligible for unique rewards or pets, a total combined damage of 31 is required. The rewards from the main drop table and the tertiary table are influenced by the player's total points from the kill. For the tertiary table, damage contributions to hitpoints and the shield are capped at 400 and 300, respectively, allowing for a maximum of 1,000 points.

The player who inflicts the most damage, also known as the MVP, receives an additional 10% of their non-unique loot, rounded up. Players can talk to Rhiannon to choose between receiving item drops or gaining Mining experience. This choice doesn’t affect the unique drop table, which is always rolled, regardless of the player’s selection.
