Merlin’s Crystal is the first quest in the Camelot series. In this quest, you rescue the wizard Merlin, trapped in a magical crystal, and ultimately claim the legendary sword Excalibur. This quest also awards more quest points than any other pre-requisite for Recipe for Disaster, making it a great early-game XP and reward boost.

Completion time: Around 9 minutes with efficient teleports.
Item Requirements
For Normal Accounts (Grand Exchange)
- Bread
- Tinderbox
- Bucket of Wax
- Bat Bones
For Ironman Accounts
- Bread: Buy from Port Sarim food store.
- Tinderbox: Purchase from a general store.
- Bucket of Wax: Use insect repellent on a beehive in the apiary south of Seers’ Village, west of Catherby, then use a bucket on the hive.
- Bat Bones: Kill bats outside the Keep (level 27 giant bats).

Quest Walkthrough
Start the Quest
- Speak with King Arthur in Camelot (east of Seers’ Village) shown in the image below. Teleport via Camelot teleport to get there quicker.
- Select options 1 → 1 to ask to join the Knights. Arthur directs you to prove yourself through this quest.
- Sir Gawain: Find him roaming the castle courtyard or inside. Ask about Merlin, selecting both dialogue options.
- Sir Lancelot: On the second floor, ask him about accessing the Keep (option 3).
Infiltrating the Keep
Items Needed: Bucket of Wax (or empty bucket)
Recommended: Combat gear, food, Varrock teleport, Games Necklace, Amulet of Glory, Falador teleport
Steps:
- Go southeast to Catherby → speak to Arhein about his boat.
- Hide in crates near the dock shown in the image below. After dialogue, workers pack you into the boat to Keep Le Faye.

Freeing Merlin
Fighting Sir Mordred
- Beware of rogue knights inside the Keep.
- Face Sir Mordred (level 39) at the top floor.

Important: When Morgan Le Faye appears, spare Mordred and continue the dialogue with Morgan. interrupting the conversation will force a redo of the fight with Mordred
Items Needed to Release Merlin
- Bat Bones: Kill giant bats outside the Keep.
- Black Candle:
- If no wax yet, use insect repellent to collect wax from beehives near the flax field in Camelot
- Take wax to the Catherby candle maker to craft a black candle.
Claiming Excalibur
Items Needed: Bread
Recommended: Falador teleport tablets (x2) or Games Necklace
Visit the Lady of the Lake at Taverley peninsula.

- She sends you to the Port Sarim jewellery shop.
- As you attempt to enter the Port Sarim Jewellery shop, a beggar will appear. Give bread to the beggar which will transform into Lady of the Lake.
Receive Excalibur.

Tip: Only click “Click here to continue” in dialogue to avoid resetting.

- Go to Varrock → Zamorak Chaos Temple (south-east).

Breaking the Crystal to Free Merlin
Items Needed: Excalibur, Black Candle, Tinderbox, Bat Bones
Recommended: Food and a weapon
Steps:
- Return to Camelot and go north-east to the castle garden.

- Light the Black Candle and place bat bones in the circle (do not bury).
- Thrantax the Mighty appears (level 92). Recite the magic words correctly to control it.
- Climb the south-east tower → use Excalibur on Merlin’s crystal to free him

Finally, speak with King Arthur to complete the quest.
Congratulations! You’ve freed Merlin and finished the quest.
