The Grand Tree is a classic Gnome quest where you’re basically saving the Grand Tree from dying and helping protect the gnome race. It’s honestly one of my favourites. You get a solid 5 Quest Points, a simple but fun boss fight, and some of the best early-game Attack XP you can get, which makes it feel really rewarding to do early on.
Overall, it’s an excellent quest to knock out early, and in terms of pure Attack XP value, it’s second only to the Knight Waves miniquest.

General Questing Tips
Enable the RuneLite Quest Helper plugin—it highlights the safe spot, which makes this part much easier. Hold the spacebar to skip through NPC dialogue and use number keys to pick chat options quickly.
Time to complete: I completed the grand Tree in 12 minutes.

1,000 coins -- unless you've helped Femi or completed Tree Gnome Village and intend to use the spirit trees.
Recommendations for the Grand Tree Quest
- Combat gear: I usually go with wizard robes and Water Bolt — perfect for safe-spotting the Black Demon.
- Food: You only really need it if you’re not safespotting. But if it’s your first time learning the safespot, bringing a little food just in case isn’t a bad idea.
- Teleport to Grand tree: Access to the Spirit Tree or necklace of passage: If you haven’t unlocked it yet, no worries — just use a Necklace of Passage to the Wizard’s Tower and run north to the Grand Tree. If using the Spirit tree, bring a ring of wealth to teleport to the grand exchange. The Spirit tree there is the easiest to reach.
- Teleport to Hazelmere, east of Yannile: the ways with least requirements are: Grouping teleport to Nightmare zone or Fishing trawler, Ardougne cloak 1-4, or ring of dueling. However, the fastest but with more requirements is through the Fairy ring CIS or watchtower teleport.
- Stamina potion
Ironman Notes:
- Necklace of Passage: If you don’t have the Spirit Tree unlocked, I highly recommend crafting a necklace of passage. It’s super handy even outside of this quest. You only need 27 Magic and 25 Crafting to make it.
Enemies to Defeat
- Black Demon (level 172): Don’t worry about the high level. It can be safely safe-spotted, so the fight is really easy once you know the trick.
Walkthrough for the Grand Tree Quest
Starting the Quest
Recommended: Teleport to Grand Tree
- Go to the Grand Tree by using the Spirit Tree at the Grand Exchange, or use a Necklace of Passage to the wizard’s outpost then head north.

- Talk to King Narnode Shareen in the Grand Tree with at least 2 empty inventory slots. Choose dialogue option 1 for him to take you to the basement. Then choose 1 again to start the quest.
Going to Hazelmere
Recommended: Teleport to Hazelmere and Teleport back to grand tree(to start next section)
- After receiving the Bank Sample and Translation, head to Hazelmere on the island east of Yanille. You can get close using Fairy Ring CLS or the Nightmare Zone minigame teleport. Alternatively, teleport to Castle Wars with a Ring of Dueling and run east to his location shown below
- Talk to Hazelmere.

- Head back to King Narnode in the Grand Tree and give him the correct translation. Be careful when picking the dialogue options — choose them in this exact order: 1, 5, 5, 2, 1, 4.
- After that, go talk to Glough, who’s just southeast of the Grand Tree. Head up the south-east stairs shown in the image below, then follow the ramp east to reach him.

- Head back to King Narnode in the Grand Tree once again.
- After speaking to him, right-click the stairs next to him and select Top floor to get there quickly. Once upstairs, talk to Charlie inside the cell as shown below

- Right-click the stairs again and select Bottom floor, then head back to Glough’s house southeast of the Grand Tree.
- Once inside, open and search the cupboard shown in the image below to find Glough’s journal.

- Talk to Glough, and your character will get arrested and thrown into a cell next to Charlie.
- Talk to Charlie then speak to King Narnode outside Charlie’s cell.
- Next, talk to Captain Errdo, just north of the cell (shown in the image below). Choose option 1 to hop on the glider and escape to Karamja.

The Foreman

- Run east past the aggressive level 53 Jogres and make your way to the shipyard in Karamja. When you get there, the shipyard worker will start a dialogue when you attempt to enter. Reply the passcode: 2, 1, 2, 2 to get inside.
- Once you’re in, you’ve got two options: fight the Foreman or just talk to him to get the Lumber Order. If you’re not super low-level, I recommend just taking him out — it’s faster. He’s combat level 23. If you prefer chatting, pick dialogue options 3, 2, 1
Tuzo
Bring: Lumber order, 1000 coins for Femi if you have not helped him
Recommended: Magic gear to safespot black Demon, food if it is your first time, just incase
- Next, head back to Charlie on the top floor of the Grand Tree. The main entrance won’t work, so either get Femi to sneak you in outside the gate or use the Spirit Tree from the Grand Exchange.
- Then, go talk to Anita, west of the Grand Tree. Pick option 1, and she’ll hand you Glough’s key. Take it back to Glough’s house, use it on the chest, and search it to grab the Invasion Plans.

- Now, take the Invasion Plans to King Narnode in the Grand Tree, but make sure you’ve got at least 4 empty inventory slots. Talk to him, and he’ll hand you four bundles of Twigs.
- Next, head back to Glough’s house and climb up the northeast tree to enter the watchtower (you’ll need 25 Agility to make it). Once you’re inside, use the twigs to spell out “TUZO” as shown in the image below.
- If you lose any twigs, just return to King Narnode, and he’ll hook you up with more.

Fighting the Black Demon
Ensure you have magic gear (or your preferred style), weapon, and runes for attack spell (preferable water spells)
- Alright, it’s time to take on the Black Demon (level 172) — don’t worry about the high level, you can safe-spot it!
Climb down the trapdoor south of the Watchtower, then head straight to the safespot shown in the image below. From there, attack with ranged or magic. I personally recommend water spells like Water Bolt or higher, since the Demon has a 40% weakness to water.

- Heads up: the Black Demon can hit up to 16, so make sure you get to the safespot as soon as you climb down the ladder. If your map is facing north, the ladder might block your cursor from clicking the safespot — no worries, just right-click the safespot and select “Walk here” to be safe.
You definitely don’t want to take a hit if you’re low-level, so use this trick to stay safe while dealing damage from ranged or magic.
Note: If you don’t manage to kill it within 10 minutes, it will disappear and the fight will reset
Finding the Darconia root
- After killing the black demon, navigate through the cave to find King Narnode, then talk to him.

- Now it’s time to find the Daconia Stone. You’ll need to search the roots around King Narnode — the ones highlighted in the image below. The stone can appear in any of the roots, so don’t get frustrated if it’s not in the first few you check. Take your time and search each root carefully.

- If you happen to lose it while moving around or messing with the inventory, don’t worry — it will reappear in the same root, so you can pick it up again. Just stay patient, and soon enough, you’ll have the stone in your hands to complete the quest.
Rewards from the Grand Tree Quest

- 5 Quest Points
- 18,400 Attack XP
- 7,900 Agility XP
- 2,150 Magic XP
- Gnome Glider Access
- Finishing the quest lets you into the mine under the Grand Tree and unlocks the Gnome Glider network. You can also use the Agility rocks shortcut to the Barbarian Outpost once you have 37 Agility. After doing Tree Gnome Village, you’ll be able to use the Spirit Tree in the Stronghold, too.
- You also get 5 Kudos — just talk to Historian Minas in the Varrock Museum to claim it.
Overall, The Grand Tree is a quick quest with solid rewards. You unlock the mine, the Gnome Glider routes, helpful shortcuts, and access to the Stronghold Spirit Tree after doing Tree Gnome Village. On top of that, it unlocks the Black Demon in the Nightmare Zone, which is a great option for early and mid-game melee. To find other monsters you should train with. Check our Nightmare zone guide
