OSRS Priest in Peril Guide: Unlock Morytania easily

OSRS Priest in Peril Guide: Unlock Morytania easily

In Priest in Peril, you’ll be helping the monk Drezel reclaim the temple and deal with what’s gone wrong there. This quest unlocks Morytania, so it’s pretty important early on. It's a very easy quest overall and one of the few low-level quests that actually gives Prayer XP.

Difficulty: Easy

Length: short

General Questing Tips

  • Enable the RuneLite Quest Helper from your plugin list—it helps keep everything clear, especially with where to go next.
  • Hold the spacebar to skip through NPC dialogue (there’s quite a bit of talking in this quest).
  • Use the number keys to pick dialogue options quickly and keep things moving.

How Long it takes

The priest in Peril took  me about 9 minutes to complete. Would take longer on ironman if you don’t have the essence at the start

Items requirements for Priest in Peril

  • 50 unnoted rune or pure essence: After completing Rune Mysteries, you can mine rune essence by speaking to Aubury in Varrock. The 50 essence collected doesn't need to be the same type.
  • Bucket

Ironman Notes

  • Rune or pure essence: You can mine these directly in the Rune Essence Mine. There are a few NPCs that can teleport you there, but I usually just talk to Aubury in Varrock since it’s the quickest and easiest option. Make sure you bring your best pickaxe before heading in — it’ll speed things up a lot.
  • Bucket: You can buy these from any general store.

Recommendations for a Priest in Peril

  • Varrock teleports: You would be heading back and forth from Varrock during this quest so these will help a lot. Chronicle is good alternative.
  • Essence pouches to carry more essence per inventory: To get an essence pouch, you can kill Abyssal Guardians, Leech, or Walkers, or earn them through the Guardian of the Rift minigame. Killing the monsters is usually faster, while Guardian of the Rift comes with extra rewards.

That said, I don’t think it’s worth going out of your way to unlock essence pouches just for this quest. I’ll explain why below.

  • Ranged or Melee gear: You can safespot the Guardian with ranged. If you prefer to use melee, bring decent melee armour.
  • Lumberyard teleport: To get to temple quicker
  • Stamina potion

Enemies to defeat

  • Temple Guardian (level 30)
  • Monk of Zamorak (level 30)

Walkthrough of Priest in Peril

Recommended: Varrock teleport

  • To kick off the quest, Teleport or run to Varrock then head over to the Varrock castle and talk to King Roald. Pick the dialogue options in this order: 1, 1, 3 to get the quest started.

Getting to the Temple

Bring: ranged or melee gear — the Temple Guardian is immune to magic — and pack a little food just in case.

Recommended: Lumberyard teleport, Varrock teleport to start the next section.

  • Run to the temple shown in the image below and try to enter it. Pick dialogue options 1, 1.

Temple east of Varrock

  • After that, get ready to face the Temple Guardian then go down the ladder just north of the temple.

Facing the Temple Guardian

  • Now it’s time to face the Temple Guardian. If you’re low-level with around 30+ Ranged, I’d stick to the safespot I’ve shown below—it keeps you safe and makes the fight easy. But if you’ve got 40+ in your Melee stats, you can just go in and take it down quickly with the adamant scimitar and armour. Once it’s dead, head back to King Roald in Varrock Castle and pick dialogue option 1.

Return to the Temple

Bring: 50 essence, a bucket, combat equipment to face a monk (safe-spottable), 1 free inventory space

Recommended: Lumberyard teleport, ranged or magic weapon and gear, Varrock teleport and essence pouch to carry more essence at a time.

Tip: If you don’t have a pouch to carry all 50 essence at once, I’d recommend bringing at least 25 at a time. Keep your weapon equipped, have a bucket in your inventory and leave one free slot—this way, you only need to make two trips to deliver all 50 essence.

  • Head back to the temple, open the door, and kill a Monk of Zamorak and it will drop a golden key. They use Magic, so be ready for that. You can easily trap one between the pews by standing just south of a pew—this lets you safespot it with Ranged or Magic. If you’re using Melee, you can also flinch it the same way.
  • Climb the stairs shown below, then go up the ladder and talk to Drezel in the prison cell. Pick dialogue options 2 → 1 to continue.

Stairs in Temple

  • Go back downstairs and head to the underground of the temple, where you fought the temple guardian.
  • Open the south gate and go east to the central room and study the monuments there to find which one has a key on it, then use the golden key in your inventory on it.

Monuments under the Temple

  • Use the bucket on the well in the middle of the monuments to fill it up.
  • Head back to the top floor of the temple, open the cell door, and talk to Drezel so he can bless the water.
  • Use the blessed water on the coffin shown in the image below

Coffin next to Dreze

  • After that, talk to Drezel again.
  • Go back down to the underground area, open the east cell door, and speak to Drezel on the eastern side of the underground temple.

Drezel underground of temple

  • Talk to Drezel again to give him the essence. If you don’t have a pouch, just teleport or run to Varrock bank—it’s the closest—grab the rest of the essence you need, and come back to finish the quest. After that, keep chatting with him to unlock Morytania
