OSRS Gemstone Crab Guide: Strategy, XP Rates & Location

OSRS Gemstone Crab Guide: Strategy, XP Rates & Location

With the release of Varlamore Part 3, OSRS players finally have access to a new type of AFK training monster like the Gemstone Crab. Unlike traditional crabs (like Ammonite or Sand crabs), which often suffer from overcrowding, hop worlds and spots competition, the Gemstone Crab introduces a unique infinite-player combat mechanic, meaning you’ll never get crashed at your spot again.

These crabs are designed for 10-minute AFK combat sessions, after which they despawn and respawn at one of three nearby locations. To make this even more convenient, caves located at each spot will teleport you directly to the next crab spawn. This makes them one of the best low-maintenance training methods in the game right now.

Requirements

  •   Quest Access: Completion of Children of the Sun, which unlocks the region of Varlamore.
  •   Optional but Recommended: Twilight’s Promise, which unlocks the Kettzle network for fast travel

That’s it — no combat requirements, no slayer tasks, and no high-level gear mandatory, the only thing that could be said to be necessary but is not, would be to use the best weapon you can or strength and attack bonuses.

How to Get To Gemstone Crabs

There are several ways to get to the place where the Gemstone crabs are, here we will carry out 2, with the Quetzal teleport and the pendat of ates

  1. Teleport to Civitās Foris (requires Varlamore access).

Use the Kettzle network to travel to Tal Teklan..

Run to any of the three crab locations nearby.

  1. Pendant of Ates

This method is the easiest but obviously requires having the pendant of ates

Location

Those crabs have a system that makes finding and maintaining your training spot effortless compared to traditional crab methods.

so choose any of the 3 spots you want to go to, if the crab isn’t at your location, simply use the cave — it will transport you directly to where the active crab has respawned.

Once you find the Gemstone Crab, all you have to do is click on attack and stay afk for 10 minutes until it changes location and chase it.

  EXP Rates

Gemstone Crabs give 87.5% of the usual combat XP per hit, but due to their unique mechanics, the actual XP per hour is higher than Ammonite or Sand crabs. Why?

  • No downtime between spawns.
  • No wasted XP from overkill damage.
  • Infinite-player scaling ensures constant training.

Gemstone crab is known to provide the highest experience rates of any crab in OSRS. When training with gemstone crab, here are the different experience rates that you should expect depending on your combat method.

  Experience rates when training melee

You can get about 5,000 average XP per hour from levels 1 to 20.

From levels 20 to 40, you can expect to gain about 20,000 XP per hour on average.

From levels 40 to 60, you can gain up to 50,000 XP per hour by using a dragon scimitar.

If you decide to kill gemstone crab until you reach 99 melee combat, you should start gaining 80,000-115,000 experience per hour if you use the best combat gear you can find.

  • Low levels (1-50): ~10–40k XP/hr
  • Mid-levels (60–80): ~60–80k XP/hr
  • High levels (90+): ~80–115k XP/hr

   Experience rates when training ranged

Beginning levels are quite quick when training at gemstone crab, and when you get to 70 ranged, you can expect to gain 50,000 experience per hour, and as you get closer to 99 ranged, you can gain up to 110,000 experience per hour.

  • Low Levels (1-50): ~20-35k XP/hr
  • Mid Levels (50-75) ~35-60k XP/hr
  • High Levels (75+) ~60-110k XP/hr

  Experience rates when training magic

When training magic at gemstone crab, you should expect about up to 30,000-90,000 experience per hour from level 60 to 99 magic. The recommended spell to use is the fire wave, but this method is expensive, and it may be worth considering options that are similar in cost but have faster experience rates, such as ice bursting/barrage maniacal monkeys.

  • Low levels (1-60): ~20–30k XP/hr
  • Mid levels (60–80): ~35–55k XP/hr
  • High levels (90+): ~60–90k XP/hr

Money-Making: Collecting Gems

While training, you can earn a small profit:

  • When the crab despawns, the first 16 players who dealt damage can mine 3 noted gems.
  • Bring a pickaxe (optionally a gem bag to store your loot).
  • The profits aren’t massive, but it’s free passive income during combat training.
