Woodcutting is one of the most relaxed and beginner-friendly skills in Old School RuneScape — and in P2P, the AFK methods are far better than in F2P. If you’re the type of player who wants to train while watching Netflix, AFK farming GP, or playing on an alt, this guide will take you step-by-step from level 1–99 using the least click-intensive methods possible.
This guide focuses only on AFK methods — not tick manipulation. We have a more detailed blog called OSRS P2P Woodcutting Guide: Fastest Way From 1-99
Using the best axe possible drastically affects XP/hr. Your upgrade path should be:

Woodcutting Level Requirements for Axes:
Pro Tip: Use the Dragon Axe special attack for a visible +3 boost to Woodcutting. Activate it before long chopping sessions or when tick manipulating.

This outfit requires 44 woodcutting to wear and grants +2.5% Woodcutting XP (set bonus) — easily acquired through Temple Trekking Minigame. If you want to see more about how to obtain it, you should check out our Temple Trekking Minigame Guide.

Fastest way to get there
Within the guild, players can find the following types of trees:
All of them are really close to a bank.

Best Location: Between Lumbridge and Draynor Village (northwest area above the pig pen)

You can drop the logs — they’re not worth banking.

Move to Varrock West Bank or Draynor Village (closer to the bank). There are multiple oak trees steps away from the bank, making it convenient if you want to keep the logs.
Best Locations:
East of Draynor Village Bank

You may bank them for early Fletching or Construction, but most players drop or bank them.

This is where AFK really starts.
Best Locations:

Most players drop or bank the logs.
This is where P2P and F2P players diverge. If you want to play F2P, you can choose between willow, maple, and yew trees, but this will depend on how AFK you want to be. Yew trees are the most relaxing, followed by maple, and lastly, willow logs in Draynor. If you're a P2P player, keep reading this guide.
Note: You can switch to teaks at level 35, but only if you want to tick-manipulate. Since this guide is AFK-focused, willows remain the smarter choice. You can take a look at the OSRS P2P Woodcutting Guide: Fastest Way From 1-99.
As soon as you hit level 60 Woodcutting, stop everything and take a boat or teleport to Zeah and go to the Woodcutting guild:

Entering the Woodcutting Guild gives an invisible +7 Woodcutting boost, meaning:
You’ll train until 99 of the skill here.

Yews are slow — and finally profitable.
Best Locations:
Woodcutting Guild and Edgeville

Expected profit varies but is consistently reliable because yews are used for bows.

Magic trees are the most relaxed AFK method in the game — but they're very slow XP.
Best Locations:
Woodcutting Guild and Mage training arena, north of Emir’s Arena.

However, the profit makes up for it.
If you follow this path, you’ll make some good millions in GP by the end.

If you want a method that sits comfortably between AFK-friendly and high XP rates without tick manipulation, then Sulliusceps on Fossil Island is one of the best training options from level 65 onward. Unlike regular trees, these aren’t stationary — Sulliusceps spawn one at a time around the Tar Swamp, so you’ll chop a mushroom tree, then move to the next spawn location.
This method requires more movement than redwoods or magics, but still counts as “low-effort” compared to tick manipulation strategies like 2–tick teaks or 1.5–tick woodcutting.
65 Woodcutting
You must complete the quest: Bone Voyage
Once you're on Fossil Island, travel to the Tar Swamp in the southwest section. There are six mushroom spawn points, but only one will be active at a time. After chopping it down, the next one will appear following a predictable rotation — once you learn the order, the method becomes much smoother.

There are tar monsters and spine mushrooms that can deal chip damage or poison you, but with the regen bonuses, most players barely need food. Many players simply reset stamina and healing by teleporting to their POH restoration pool after every full cycle.
You must chop the Sulliusceps in the order indicated in the picture. Every Sulliuscep will respawn in the same order (from 1 to 6). When you reach the endpoint (6), there is a rubber cap that can be used to return to the starting point (1), and it is obviously recommended to use it.

While XP varies with level, axe type, and how efficiently you move between spawns, Sulliusceps consistently outperform all non–tick manipulation woodcutting methods.
By level 99, it’s common to see:
This makes Sulliusceps the fastest non-tick manipulation method in the game, beating yews, magics, teaks (AFK), and even redwoods in raw XP per hour.
If you train exclusively here from 65–99, expect to chop around 97,000+ mushrooms.
Sulliusceps are unique because they reward valuable fossils and nummulites, which no other tree does.
On average, from 65–99, you can expect:
These fossils can be:
After completing the Fossil Exhibit section of the Varrock Museum, all remaining fossils can be processed into bones and sacrificed for EXP — completely free.
This is equivalent to the value of dragon bones at the Chaos Altar, making Sulliusceps not only efficient Woodcutting XP, but also a passive Prayer training method.

Once you've completed most of Sins of the Father, you unlock access to Darkmeyer and the Blisterwood tree — one of the most relaxed Woodcutting methods in the game.
This tree has two advantages:
There is a 1 in 10 chance your character stops on its own, meaning a simple click every so often keeps the XP flowing. A sound plays when chopping ends, making it possible to train with the client minimised or while doing other tasks IRL.
Depending on the axe type and passives:
|
Setup |
XP/hr |
|
Standard Dragon Axe |
~60-70k XP/hr |
|
Crystal Axe + Forester's Rations |
~70-80k XP/hr (near-max efficiency) |
If you're using an Infernal Axe, the Blisterwood logs automatically burn during chopping, giving you passive Firemaking XP, making this one of the best dual-training options in the game.
Blisterwood is more efficient than magics and redwoods until around level 90, where switching to redwoods becomes more relaxed and similar in XP.

Redwoods are the definitive AFK training method in OSRS Woodcutting.
Best Location: Woodcutting Guild, here is the only place where these trees can be found.

You can:
Even if you gathered magic logs earlier, most players finish 90–99 here because nothing is as brain-off as redwoods.
Most players hit 99 in 4–5 weeks of casual play. Don't feel bad if it's more for you, this is really random in terms of what other activity you do while AFK.
If you're looking for a low-effort, profitable, and AFK-friendly way to reach level 99 Woodcutting in P2P, this guide is for you.
You’ll start small with trees and willows, earn true AFK consistency at yews and magics, and finally cruise through the last levels with redwoods in the Woodcutting Guild. You can also go and cut Teak Trees, but for that method, we have a more detailed blog called OSRS P2P Woodcutting Guide: Fastest Way From 1-99, although it's not specified in AFK methods. If you want to see it, just click here, and it will take you there.
Relax, click occasionally, and enjoy the grind — this is one of the chillest 99s in OSRS.
