OSRS Gertrude’s Cat Guide: Find Fluffs and her kitten

OSRS Gertrude’s Cat Guide: Find Fluffs and her kitten

Gertrude’s Cat is a super short, beginner-friendly quest where you help Gertrude find her lost cat, Fluffs. There’s no skill or quest requirements, so it’s perfect if you’re just starting out. Once you finish, you get your own kitten—pretty important since a grown cat is needed for a few future quests. I usually start raising mine right away, and I highly recommend using the Kitten Tracker plugin on RuneLite so you don’t forget to feed or pet it—trust me, if you lose your kitten, you’ll have to start training a new one all over again!

Difficulty: Easy
Length: Very short

Completion time: I finished in about 5 minutes (super beginner-friendly). You can expect roughly the same if you’re new.

General Questing Tips

  • Turn on RuneLite Quest Helper (RuneLite → Plugins). It’s great since it marks the crates when you’re hunting for Fluffs.

  • Hold the spacebar to skip dialogue and save some time.

  • Use the number keys to quickly select chat options and avoid misclicks.

Item Requirements

(Normal accounts can buy everything on the Grand Exchange.)

  • Bucket of milk
  • 100 coins
  • Raw sardine

Ironman Item Sources

  • Bucket of milk: Milk cows in Lumbridge with a bucket.
  • Raw sardine: Buy from Gerrant’s Fish Shop in Port Sarim.

(Optional, but makes the quest smoother.)

  • Skills necklace (Cook’s Guild teleport): to start the quest.
  • Varrock teleport
  • Lumberyard teleport
  • Axe

Walkthrough

Before starting, put everything you need in your inventory so you won’t need to bank.

Talk to Gertrude

  • Gertrude is south of the Cook’s Guild in Varrock shown in the map below. Choose option 1 and she’ll tell you about Fluffs.

Behind her house, pick up some Doogle leaves as shown in the image below and use them on your sardine to make a seasoned sardine.

Speak to Wilough and Shilop

  • Bring 100 coins and head to Varrock Square. I think it is best you walk there instead of wasting a teleport - it is really close. Talk to either child and choose dialogue options 2 → 2. Pay them the 100 coins and they’ll tell you about their secret playground

Find Fluffs in the Lumberyard

Bring: Bucket of milk, Seasoned sardine, Raw sardine (for the seasoning step if not done earlier)

Recommended: Varrock teleport (to start next section)

  • Travel to the Lumberyard northeast of Varrock. Normal accounts can use a Lumberyard Teleport to save time.
  • Climb over the broken fence, then head north and go up the ladder.

  •  You’ll find Fluffs at the top.

  • Try to pick her up—she’ll hiss. Use the milk and seasoned sardine on her, but she still won’t leave because her kittens are missing.

Find the Kitten

Climb back down and start searching the crates until you find Fluffs. A few things to keep in mind:

  • Searching the same crate twice won’t do anything.

  • The “mew!” message pops up randomly, but the kitten only spawns in one specific crate.

  • I find it faster to check the crates closest to the ladder first before the ones at the edges—saves some running back and forth. You can check the image below for the crate locations.

Crates in Lumberyard

  • If the kitten doesn’t appear in your inventory, log out and back in to reset the event. Don’t drop the kitten—you’ll have to find it again.
  • Once you have the kitten, return upstairs and use it on Fluffs. They’ll run back home (only the kitten despawns—Fluffs stays in place).

Finish the Quest

  • Return to Gertrude to complete the quest.
  • Optional tip: If you’re wearing a Ring of Charos (a) when you turn in the quest, you can pick your kitten’s colour.

Reward from Gertrude's Cat

  • 1 Quest Point
  • 1,525 Cooking XP

Ironman Tips

  • Save the chocolate cake for A Tail of Two Cats.
  • Save the stew for The Queen of Thieves.
  • Start raising your kitten early—a grown cat is required for Evil Dave’s subquest in Recipe for Disaster.
