OSRS Ironman Herblore Training Guide

OSRS Ironman Herblore Training Guide

Herblore is one of the most challenging skills to train as an Ironman, mainly because obtaining the necessary herbs and secondary ingredients can be tedious and time-consuming. Unlike regular accounts that can buy supplies from the Grand Exchange, Ironman must rely on farming, monster drops, and other methods to gather resources.

Fastest Methods of Training Herblore on Ironman

Level 1-26: Questing

Druidic is essential as it unlocks the Herblore skill and also gives Herblore XP.

  • Druidic ritual: rewards 250 herblore
  • Jungle potion: requires 3 herblore and rewards 775 herblore XP
  • Recruitment Drive: requires Black Knights’ Fortress, Druidic Ritual, and rewards 1,000 Herblore XP
  • Zogre Flesh Eaters: requires Big Chompy Bird Hunting, Jungle potion, 8 herblore, 4 smithing, 30 ranged, and rewards 2,000 herblore XP.
  • The Digsite Site: requires 10 herblore, 10 agility, 25 thieving and rewards 2,000 Herblore XP.
  • Shades of Morton: requires Priest in peril, 15 herblore, 20 crafting, 5 firemaking, and rewards 2,000 herblore XP
  • Heroes’ Quest requires 25 herblore, 55 quest points, 53 cooking, 53 fishing, and 50 mining and some quests. It rewards 1,325 Herblore XP.

These give a total of 9,350 Herblore XP, taking the player from 1 to 26 herblore.

Levels 26-60: Cleaning herbs and making potions or tar

From levels 26 to 60,  the fastest Herblore training method is cleaning herbs and making potions or tar. Cleaning herbs provides passive XP and prepares them for potion-making while making potions offers more consistent experience gains. This method will leave you with several useful potions, especially for ironman.

  • energy potionsAt level 26: Make Energy potions. It requires Harralander and Chocolate Dust. Chocolate bars can be bought from the Culinaromancer’s Chest, Rok’s Chocs Box in Nardah, or Hudo at the Grand Tree Groceries. Chocolate bars also spawn at the Cooks' Guild and Zanaris.
  • prayer potionAt level 38: Make Prayer potions. It requires Ranarr Weed and Snape Grass. Snape grass can be grown in allotment patches at 61 Farming or found on the Hobgoblin peninsula east of Hosidius. It also spawns on Waterbirth Island and behind the Crafting Guild.
  • tarromin tarAt level 39: Make Tarromin Tar. It requires Tarromin and Swamp Tar. Swamp Tar can be found in Lumbridge Swamp and Mort Myre Swamp. Larger amounts can be obtained from Zulrah or the Lunar Chest.
  • super attack potionAt level 45: Make Super attack potions. It requires Irit Leaf and Eye of Newt. Eye of Newt can be bought from Betty in Port Sarim.
  • super energy potionAt level 52: Make Super energy potions. It requires Avantoe and Mort Myre Fungus. Mort Myre Fungus can be gathered in Mort Myre Swamp by casting Bloom with a blessed silver sickle near dead logs. The fastest passive method involves a fairy ring to a rejuvenation pool in the POH. Having the hard Morytania Diary completed doubles the amount gathered.
  • super strength potionAt level 55: Make Super Strength potions. It requires Kwuarm and Limpwurt Root. Limpwurt roots can be grown in flower patches at 26 Farming, looted from Kurasks, Nechryaels, and deviant spectres, or obtained by pickpocketing master farmers, exchanging mole parts to Wyson, and opening seed nests.

Levels 60-99: Mastering Mixology

mastering mixology

The Mastering Mixology minigame involves helping the Alchemical Society create potions, which grant Herblore XP and resins that can be exchanged for valuable rewards. It requires no secondary ingredients and offers more XP per herb, making it a more effective Herblore training method for Ironman. As shown at the bottom of the mastering Mixology guide on OSRS wiki, using your herbs for the mastering mixology minigame will give you up to 4x more XP per herb than using the herbs to make their respective potions.

The main disadvantage of this method is that it is click-intensive and requires a lot of attention. However, it is more efficient and has great rewards. To learn how to play this minigame and see the rewards to expect, check our Mastering Mixology guide.

XP per hour from Mastering Mixology

  • At 60 Herblore: Approximately 50,000 XP per hour.
  • At 70 Herblore: Approximately 60,000 XP per hour.
  • At 81 Herblore: Approximately 70,000 XP per hour.
  • At 90 Herblore: Approximately 80,000 XP per hour.
  • At 99 Herblore: Approximately 91,000 XP per hour.

Alternative Method of Training Herblore on Ironman

Levels 60+: making potions

attack potion

A less click-intensive method to 99 herblore is to continue to make potions. It would take longer as you need to get more herbs and secondary ingredients. However, making useful potions like stamina, prayer, or combat potions will be helpful on your account in the future.

Obtaining Herbs for Herblore Training

A significant portion of training Herblore as an Ironman is spent gathering the required herbs. Since this is slow, it's important to use every available method. The methods outlined below are among the most effective, and combining them will ensure you maximize your herb supply for more efficient training.

Herbiboar

herbiboar

Herbiboar involves tracking the Herbiboar across Fossil Island and earning herbs as a reward for each catch. Since this method requires a lot of running, stamina potions are recommended. It is a great way to get herbs for training herblore while also getting hunter XP.

Herbs per hour from Herbiboar

While playing the herbiboar and using 7.5 stamina potions per hour, players can expect 34 Grimy guam leaf, 14 Grimy ranarr weed, 13 Grimy irit leaf, 15 Grimy avantoe, 19 Grimy kwuarm, 12 Grimy Snapdragon, 20 Grimy Cadantine, 19 Grimy Lantadyme, 16 Grimy dwarf weed, and 13 Grimy torsol.

Managing Miscellania

Managing Miscellania is a profitable daily activity, where players assign citizens of Miscellania and Etceteria (after completing the Royal Trouble quest) to gather various resources. These resources are then deposited directly into the player's bank. Ironman can assign the citizens to gather herbs, which can then be used to train herblore. Coins are required to assign citizens, so training thieving before using this method is advisable.

Requirement for Managing Miscellania

Completion of Throne of Miscellania and Royal trouble to unlock more resources.

Check our Managing Miscellania guide to find the best method for doing this activity.

Herbs from Managing Miscellania

While managing Miscellania daily, players can get 61 various grimy herbs like Tarromin, Harralander, Ranarr weed, Irit leaf, Avantoe, kwuarm, cadantine, lantadyme, and dwarf weed. They will also get 1250 flax.

Herb runs

herbs

There are 10 herb patches available for herb runs, and it is highly recommended players unlock all of them to maximize the number of herbs harvested per run. A full herb run typically takes between five and ten minutes, making it a quick and passive method for obtaining herbs for Herblore. The seeds to plant these herbs can be gotten from pickpocketing the master farmers.

Bossing and Raids

vet'ion

High-level players can obtain a good amount of herbs and Herblore XP from the Chambers of Xeric, either through dark relics or by making potions inside the raid. Those using Craw’s Bow or Viggora’s Chainmace can also target Wilderness bosses like Venanatis, Vet’ion, and Callisto, as they drop 100 noted herbs, including Snapdragon, Ranarr Weed, and Toadflax. These bosses also provide a decent number of Ranarr and Snapdragon seeds. Additionally, Venanatis occasionally drops 500 noted Red Spiders' Eggs. Check our Venanatis, Vet’ion, and Callisto guides to learn the best strategy for killing them.

Additionally, players can kill Aberrant spectres and Kurasks to get herbs, preferably when on a slayer task. Spitting Wyverns have a high drop rate of 4-dose prayer potions so killing them is a good way to obtain ranarr seeds, and ranarr weeds for training.
