OSRS Ironman Magic Training Guide

OSRS Ironman Magic Training Guide

The main difference when training Magic on an Ironman is the difficulty of obtaining runes. Ironman must rely on Runecrafting, monster drops, shop restocks, or the  Guardian of the Rift to maintain a steady rune supply. Due to this limitation, the best Magic training methods for ironman focus on maximizing efficiency and minimizing the runes needed.

Fastest Path for training Magic on Ironman

Level 1-34: Questing

The fastest method of starting magic is to complete quests that give magic XP. The following quests reward players with magic XP, and the bosses are all safe-spottable.

  • Witch’s Potion: It rewards 325 Magic XP upon completion.
  • Imp Catcher: It rewards 875 Magic XP upon completion.
  • The Grand Tree: It requires killing a Level 172 Black Demon, requires 25 Agility (boostable), and rewards 2,150 Magic XP.
  • Watchtower: It requires killing Level 68 Gorad and Level 27 Giant Bat, requires 14 Magic (boostable), 15 Thieving (boostable), 25 Agility (boostable), 14 Herblore (boostable), and 40 Mining (boostable), and rewards 15,250 Magic XP.
  • The Giant Dwarf: It requires 12 Firemaking (boostable), 16 Thieving (boostable), 33 Magic (boostable), 14 Herblore (boostable), and rewards 1,500 Magic XP.

Total: Completing all these quests rewards 20,100 Magic XP.

Level 34–55: Mage Training Arena

Playing the Mage Training Arena is great for training magic as you also get points that can be used to unlock several valuable rewards. Check our mage training arena guide to find the best way to play the minigame and the rewards to expect.

To train with this method, you need to do money-making activities like Agility pyramid, pickpocketing Ardy knights, or blackjacking so you can afford to buy runes. Check out our money-making guide to find other profitable activities for ironmen.

XP per hour from MTA at 33 magic

At 33 magic, players can play the telegrab theatre in MTA, which requires fire and nature runes. This room gives players up to 18,000 magic XP per hour while getting telekenisis points.

Level 55-70: High Level Alchemy

high alchemy

At 55 Magic, players can cast High Level Alchemy on various profitable items such as unstrung maple longbows, gold bracelets, and valuable monster drops. This method provides consistent Magic XP while making a profit. It’s beneficial to combine Magic training with Slayer, as you can alch the drops you get from killing assigned monsters, allowing you make progress on both skills at the same time.

Cutting maple logs and fletching them into maple longbows is also a great way to generate alchable items. If you're already planning to train the Woodcutting and Fletching, this method allows you to efficiently get Magic, Woodcutting, and Fletching XP while making a profit.

XP per hour from High-Level Alchemy

Casting the High-level alchemy gives 78,000 magic XP per hour. Ensure to note all the items so you don’t need to use a bank.

Level 70-99: Casting Ice bursting on Dust Devils

dust devils

At 70 Magic, players can cast Ice Burst from the Ancient Magicks spellbook. On average, it takes 10 casts to kill a Dust Devil with high magic stats, costing 600 GP per cast or 6K GP per kill. Since Dust Devils drop many alchable items, each kill is worth around 3K GP. By stacking 8 at a time in the Catacombs of Kourend, players can expect to earn 24K GP in drops for every 6K GP spent on runes, making it a profitable training method. For the best XP rates, wear high Magic damage gear such as Virtus robes to maximize damage and efficiency.

Bursting while on Slayer task

You should Burst Dust Devils while on a Slayer task, as wearing a Slayer Helm increases your magic damage, reducing the number of casts needed per kill and improving XP rates while also gaining Slayer XP. Most players reach 99 Magic before 99 Slayer, so it's more efficient to train Magic through Slayer tasks rather than focusing solely on Magic training. This method ensures steady progress toward 99 Magic and 99 Slayer, maximizing efficiency.

XP per hour when bursting Dust Devils

At 80+ magic, players can expect up to 200K magic XP per hour.

Obtaining runes

The most efficient way for ironman to obtain runes is through Runecrafting, either by playing the Guardian of the Rift minigame or crafting runes at their respective altars. Guardian of the Rift is highly recommended, as it provides runes and also offers valuable rewards. For the best strategies on maximizing XP and rewards, refer to our Guardian of the Rift guide for an in-depth breakdown of optimal gameplay.

Alternatively, players can buy the runes they want from any Magic shops, represented by a icon.

Alternative Magic Training Methods for Ironman

Arceuus Library

arceuus library

Customers in the Arceuus Library reward players with Magic XP for finding books, making this one of the fastest alternative training methods for early Magic levels. Each book turned in grants 15 times your current Magic level in XP. The most efficient way to do this is by using the RuneLite plugin, which helps track book locations.

Follow these steps to train in Arceuus Library efficiently.

  1. Enable the RuneLite plugin before starting.
  2. Speak to the customers to get requests.
  3. Search different locations until the plugin updates with exact book locations.
  4. Collect and turn in multiple books at once for faster XP gains.

Since book locations randomly change, you must re-search them when they do..

XP per hour from Arceuus Library

The XP rates below assume the player can turn in 120 books per hour, which is easily achievable. If a player manages 150 books per hour, the rates will be even higher.

  • At level 1 Magic, players can gain 1,800 XP per hour (2,250 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 10 Magic, 18,000 XP per hour (22,500 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 20 Magic, 36,000 XP per hour (45,000 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 30 Magic, 54,000 XP per hour (67,500 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 40 Magic, 72,000 XP per hour (90,000 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 50 Magic, 90,000 XP per hour (112,500 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 60 Magic, 108,000 XP per hour (135,000 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 70 Magic, 126,000 XP per hour (157,500 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 80 Magic, 144,000 XP per hour (180,000 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 90 Magic, 162,000 XP per hour (202,500 at 150 books/h).
  • At level 99 Magic, 178,200 XP per hour (222,750 at 150 books/h).

Level 86+: Plank Make

plank make

Some players choose to train Magic with Plank Make, especially if they plan to use the planks for Construction. While this is not the most efficient method for obtaining planks or training Magic, it offers a an AFK alternative that can save money in the long run.

Each cast of Plank Make requires coins, earth runes, and nature runes, making Runecrafting an essential skill to sustain this method. If you’re looking for a slower but passive way to gain Magic XP while preparing for Construction, this can be a viable option.

XP per hour from Plank Make

Players can get 165,000 magic XP per hour when casting the spells manually or 85,000 if not.
