The Tourist Trap is a quest that involves an undercover operation to rescue an Al Kharidian woman's daughter from a slave camp.  

  

General Questing recommendations: Enable RuneLite Quest Helper in your RuneLite plugin section, hold your space bar to skip through NPC dialog, and use number keys for chatting dialog.  

 

Time to complete: It took me about 17 minutes to finish The Tourist Trap. I didn’t get caught by any guards, but that’s mainly because I’m familiar with the quest. If you’re new to it, expect it to take a bit longer.

Recommendations for Tourist Trap

  • Amulet of glory (1 charge): to start the quest.
  • Shantay pass: You’ll need a Shantay Pass to get through the gate. Just buy one directly from Shantay at the pass before heading into the desert.
  • Bring waterskins to survive the desert heat.

  • Equip a knife to cut cacti for water refills.

  • Pickaxe for mining sections.

  • Small amount of GP for miscellaneous needs.

  • Combat gear for the Mercenary Captain: wizard robes, hat, and Fire Blast work well.

  

Walkthrough of Tourist Trap

Starting the Quest

I’d recommend bringing all the required and recommended items before you start the quest, so you don’t have to keep running back to a bank mid-quest. It saves time and makes the whole thing way smoother.

  • On a normal account, the easiest way to start the quest is to teleport to Al Kharid with an Amulet of Glory, then just run south to Irena, who’s just south of Shantay Pass. You will need Shantay pass to get through the gate. Without a glory, you’ll need to run from Lumbridge, go through the toll gate, and then head south to her.
  • When you talk to Irena, pick options 1, 1 to offer your help finding her daughter.

Before heading in, make sure you’re prepared: equip desert clothes, bring waterskins, and unequip any metal armor. If your waterskins run low, you can refill them by cutting cacti along the way.

Fighting the Mercenary Captain

Head south to the Desert Mining Camp to the Mercenary captain using the path shown below and talk to him. During the dialogue, choose options 1, 2, 2, 2, 1 to mock the Captain so he fights you without his guards intervening. Important: Don’t attack early. The Captain’s guards can overwhelm you, drain your water, and deal heavy damage.

Safespot Tips

  • talk to one of the mercenaries when the fight starts, then use him to stop the Mercenary captain from reaching you, as shown below. This lets you attack with mage or ranged safely.

  • Alternatively, set up a dwarf multicannon west of the gate and lure the Captain to the edge of his roaming area.

Entering the Desert Camp

  • Before you enter the desert camp, make sure you unequip all combat gear. If you walk in wearing gear, you’ll get thrown straight into prison.
  • If you do get caught, don’t panic — bend the bars on the window, climb out, then scale the rocks and cliffs to escape.
  • In the desert camp, run east to the Male Slave shown in image below and talk to him. Pick replies 1, 2, 1, 1, 1 so he explains his escape plan. Talk to him again and choose 1, 1 to help remove his cuffs and swap outfits with him. Just make sure no guards are nearby when you do this. Watch their patrol routes carefully, because getting caught can make you lose the cell door key.

Entering the Mine

  • Enter the mine door north of the slave, shown in the image below, while wearing the slave clothes.
  • Once you’re underground, be careful — don’t remove the outfit and don’t mention the key in dialogue, or the guards will throw you into forced mining. If that happens, you’ll have to mine 15 rocks and hand them in all at once, and any items you dropped will be gone.

Also, guards can still attack you even while wearing the slave robes, so stay alert and keep moving.

  • In the mine, click the marked spot below to go round to the other side of the mine and talk to the guard there. During the dialogue, choose options 2, 2 to tell him to you wish to mine a new area and he will tell you he wants a 'Tenti Pineapple'.

  • Run back through the mine door and return to the surface. Make sure to unequip the slave clothes before leaving the camp. 
  • Go west to the Bedabin Camp indicated by quest icon below and speak to Al Shabim in the south tent. During the dialogue, select 1, 1  and he’ll promise the pineapple if you bring him the weapon plans and gives you a key.

  • Return to the Slave camp again. Remember to ensure you have no armour or weapon. Climb up the ladder inside the building, then search the bookcase on the west side highlighted in the image below

  • Talk to Captain Siad about sailing to distract him. choose options 1, 5, 3, 1 in that order, for him to drift into a long sailing rant, which gives you the perfect chance to open his chest and take the Technical plans unnoticed.
  • Return to Al Shabim in the Bedabin Camp with the Technical plans, 1 bronze bar, a hammer, and 50 feathers.
  • Talk to Al Shabim. Select chat options 1, 1 during the dialogue and he will give you permission to use the nearby north anvil.
  • Head into the north tent shown below and try to make a prototype dart tip by using a bronze bar on the anvil. If it works, attach the feathers to turn it into a Prototype Dart. You can fail either step, so bring a few extra materials just in case — it took me about 3 tries, which is probably about average for most players.

  • Return the dart and the technical plans to Al Shabim, and he’ll give you the pineapple.

Finding Anna

  • After the conversation with Al Shabim, go back to the camp, equip the Slave shirt, Slave robe, and Slave boots, then enter the mine.
  • Follow the cave around and talk to the guard like you did before. After the conversation, enter the mine cave through the entrance behind the guard

  • While inside the Mine cave, right-click Search (not look in) the nearby barrels until you find one you can pick up (highlighted below)— you’ll need it later. Right-click to search the minecart and reply 1 to ride it. Note: It is possible to fail this stunt and take 1-4 damage by banging your knee or falling off the edge of the minecart.

  • Follow the path to the northwest corner, where you will find Anna (highlighted in minimap below). Then, use a barrel on her. Note: If you talk to Ana, remember the guards are listening. Don’t mention the guards or the key — they’ll throw you into the mines and confiscate it.

  • Right-click to use Anna on the mine cart you came in with. Then, right-click search the mine cart to ride it yourself. Warning: If you try to exit the mine with Ana still in your inventory, the guards will discover her, you will be jailed, and you’ll have to restart the Finding Ana section.
  • After the ride, right-click to search the barrel next to you to find Ana. Right-click use the barrel on the Winch bucket. The nearby guard will offer to help hoist it—choose reply options 1, 1 to send Anna to the surface.

  • Walk through the mine entrance highlighted bewlo and return to the surface.

  • Right-click and operate the winch in the southwest corner of the camp highlighted below, then search the barrel that comes to the surface to retrieve Anna.

  • Use Anna on the Wooden cart in the middle of the camp, then talk to the minecart driver. Then carefully select the following chat options 2, 2, 1, 3, 3, 3, 1, 2 in order to get out of the camp. Warning: If you click the wrong dialogue options you will have to redo the majority of this quest!

  • After the conversation and the mine cart driver has agreed, right-click the wooden cart and choose the option to escape on it
  • After escaping, bring Anna back to Irena south of Shantay Pass to complete the quest.

  • 2 Quest points
  • Desert Mining Camp Access
  • Ability to make throwing darts
  • 2 lots of 4,650 XP in agility, fletching, smithing, or thieving
  • Wrought iron key – used to unlock a special door inside the Desert Mining Camp that leads to higher-tier ore rocks, including mithril and adamantite.
  • Full slave robes
  • 6 bronze darts

  

The two sets of 4,650 XP each are super handy for agility. Instead of grinding beginner courses, you can just complete the quest and use the rewards to jump straight from 1 to 26 Agility — saves a ton of time.
