Hunters’ Rumours are similar to farming contracts and slayer tasks.
Whether you’re an Ironman chasing the Huntsman outfit or a main account looking for a more dynamic Hunter grind, this guide will walk you through everything you need to know — from requirements to efficient block lists and rewards.
In Old School RuneScape’s Hunter Rumours minigame, there’s no direct in-game option to “block” certain tasks like you can in Slayer.
However, players have found a clever workaround that lets you effectively create your own block list, so you can avoid the slow or annoying creatures and focus on high XP tasks.

Make sure to enable the Hunter Rumours plugin on RuneLite — it will show:
This single plugin turns the entire system into a streamlined Slayer-like experience, showing all critical data without opening the wiki or pausing your gameplay.
Ironmen are also advised to do hunter rumours because of the useful rewards that can be obtained; the guild hunter outfit, various herbs for training herblore, and logs for training construction are good examples. If hunter rumours are done properly, Ironmen can also get high experience rates; the experience rate is 250,000 XP per hour and up to 300,000 XP per hour when players get to 99 hunter.
The Hunter’s Guild is located in Varlamore, south of Civitas illa Fortis.
Inside the guild, you’ll find Guild Scribe Verete, who introduces you to the Hunter Rumours system.

Novice Inventory

Expert Inventory

Max Inventory

The system functions similarly to Slayer tasks:
Talk to a Hunter Master to receive a rumour (task).
The master assigns a specific creature to catch or kill.
Hunt that creature until you receive a special, rare item, which automatically appears in your inventory.

You will receive this item at the latest on the 50th effective catch. If you haven't received it by the 49th, you are guaranteed to receive it by the 50th. Once you have the item they sent you, return to your Master to receive your reward.

Return to the guild and turn in the item for XP, loot bags, and potential upgrades.

There are four Hunter Masters, each unlocking at different Hunter levels:
|
Tier |
Required Level |
Description |
|
Novice |
|
Beginner tier with simple tasks like kebbits and salamanders. |
|
Adept |
|
Moderate tasks and access to better loot bags. |
|
Expert |
|
Harder creatures, more XP, and access to pet chance & rare blueprints. |
|
Master |
|
Requires completion of At First Light; gives top-tier XP, loot, and blueprint upgrades. |
You can accept rumours from all tiers you ask for — but only one can be active at a time.
Blocking tasks efficiently is the key to maximising XP per hour. Some assigned hunts (like pitfall traps) take longer and yield lower XP rates.
You can block rumours by first getting the rumour you want to block from one of the guild hunters, and since guild hunters will not assign a rumour that another guild hunter already assigns, this essentially blocks the rumour. For a block to work, the rumour that you wish to block must be one that can be assigned by both of the guild hunters that are used for the block
By default, the option to do this is disabled. However, players can speak to the Guild Scribe Verity downstairs in the Hunters’ Guild, as shown below, to toggle it on or off; this is advantageous as players can use this to consecutively get a desirable rumour assignment by turning it on after a desirable rumour and turning it off after an undesirable rumour assignment.
You need to strategise to maximise your experience rates and rewards. First, ensure you have at least 71 hunter, as getting reasonable experience rates below this level is challenging. Then, set up your block list, so you block the bad rumour assignments and get only the good ones. To get optimal experience rates, you should set your block list with the method below based on your hunter level.
Here’s how to manage it
Start with the lowest-tier Hunter Master (Novice).

Move up to the next-tier Master (Adept) and do the same.

Continue this process until all your available Masters have one task stored.

From now on, only complete tasks from the Master you’re actively hunting with — don’t finish the ones you stored, or you’ll lose the block.

At lower levels (below 72 Hunter), you can typically block two pitfall tasks.
At higher levels (Expert and Master tiers), you can expand this block list further for even smoother task cycles.

Jagex definitely wanted to turn hunter into a kind of skill like slayer, which makes hunter a slightly more diverse skill in terms of how to level up.
By building an optimal block list, using RuneLite plugins, and upgrading your meat whistles, you can turn Hunter from a headache into one of the most enjoyable skilling experiences in the game.
