OSRS Melee Weapon Progression: What to Buy from Level 1 to 99
Find the right weapon for every level from 1 to 99 Attack, comparing low-level Scimitars to high-level weapons.
Last updated October 2026. Reflects game data checked on 9 October 2026 and GE prices checked in October 2026, after the 22 July 2026 Summer Sweep-Up Gear and PvM Changes update.
The best rings in OSRS are the Ultor ring for melee (about 109M), the Venator ring for ranged (39.8M) and the Magus ring for magic (20.9M). For less money, imbue a Berserker, Archers or Seers ring, at about 3.9M, 2.1M and 799K.
A cheap ring gets close to the best one in this slot. The Berserker ring (i) gives +8 Strength for about 3.9M. The Ultor ring gives +12 for about 109M, so the last four points of Strength cost roughly 106M.
The right ring also depends on the fight. I wear a Lightbearer at Tombs of Amascut, a Ring of Suffering (ri) in the Inferno and a Ring of Shadows at Wilderness bosses.
I ranked each ring on its equipment bonuses, then on its cost, then on any special effect. The bonuses come from the game's equipment data, the same table the OSRS DPS calculator reads, checked on 9 October 2026.
I did not run a DPS benchmark for this guide. Ring bonuses range from +2 to +24, so I compare them directly. Rings that help more than one style, like the Brimstone ring, appear in each style's list with their own entry.
Prices are 24-hour Grand Exchange averages taken in October 2026, and they move with Grand Exchange trends. Untradeable rings are priced by what it costs to make or earn them. Check the live price yourself before you buy anything expensive.
Three terms I use: BiS means best in slot, the strongest item for that slot. A spec is a special attack, which spends special attack energy. NH is a PvP fight where both players switch between melee, ranged and magic.
The Ultor ring is the best melee ring in OSRS, and the Berserker ring (i) is the one to buy until you can afford it. Melee rings come in two kinds: Strength rings raise your max hit, and accuracy rings help one attack style land.
Strength raises your max hit, so the Strength rings come first. The three accuracy rings at the end are spec swaps, not rings you wear all trip.
| Rank | Ring | Requirements | Strength | Melee Attack | Melee Defence | Prayer | Tradeable | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Ultor ring | One Vardorvis kill | +12 | +0 | 0/0/0 | +0 | Yes | 109M | All melee |
| 2 | Berserker ring (i) | None | +8 | +0 | 0/0/8 | +0 | Base only | 3.9M + imbue | Melee under 5M |
| 3 | Bellator ring | One Whisperer kill | +6 | +20 slash | 0/0/0 | +0 | Yes | 17.5M | Slash specs |
| 4 | Brimstone ring | None | +4 | +4 all styles | 4/4/4 | +0 | Yes | 1.9M | Hybrid PvM and PKing |
| 5 | Ring of shadows | Desert Treasure II | +2 | +4 all styles | 0/0/0 | +2 | No | 75K to replace | Wilderness bossing |
| 6 | Tyrannical ring (i) | None | +0 | +8 crush | 0/0/8 | +0 | Base only | 191K + imbue | Crush specs |
| 7 | Treasonous ring (i) | None | +0 | +8 stab | 8/0/0 | +0 | Base only | 80K + imbue | Stab specs |
| 8 | Warrior ring (i) | None | +0 | +8 slash | 0/8/0 | +0 | Base only | 52K + imbue | Cheap slash specs |
Melee defence is listed as stab/slash/crush. GE prices checked October 2026. Imbue costs are listed in the Berserker Ring (i) section.
The Ultor ring is what I wear for melee Slayer, bossing and training once I can afford it. Its +12 Strength is the highest on any ring, and it gives nothing else.

You make it from an Ultor vestige, which Vardorvis drops at 1/1,088. Crafting it takes a Berserker icon, 500 blood runes, three chromium ingots, 90 Magic and 80 Crafting. It cannot be imbued.
At about 109M, it costs 28 times as much as an imbued Berserker ring for four more points of Strength. A 1/1,088 drop is a long farm. If you would rather skip it, you can buy the Ultor ring from our store.
Until you can afford an Ultor ring, wear the Berserker ring (i). It has two-thirds of the Ultor ring's Strength for under 4% of the price.
Dagannoth Rex drops the Berserker ring at 1/128, and imbuing doubles its +4 Strength to +8. If another player kills you while it is unprotected, the ring loses its imbue. The points or Zeal Tokens come back, so you can imbue it again.
.webp)
Imbuing doubles the bonuses of a Fremennik ring (Berserker, Archers, Seers, Warrior) or a Wilderness ring (Treasonous, Tyrannical, Ring of the gods). It costs 650,000 Nightmare Zone points, or 325,000 with the hard Combat Achievements tier. Soul Wars charges 260 Zeal Tokens, and Emir's Arena sells a scroll of imbuing for 200 reward points.
Two rings have their own imbue price. The Ring of suffering costs 725,000 points (362,500 with the hard tier) or 300 Zeal Tokens. The Granite ring costs 500,000 points (250,000 with the hard tier) or 200 Zeal Tokens.
Earning 650,000 NMZ points is a long grind. If you would rather skip it, we can earn the points on your account.
The Berserker ring (i) is the first ring I buy on any account that trains melee.
The Bellator ring is for slash weapons when you miss too often. Its +20 slash attack is the biggest accuracy bonus on any ring, and it adds +6 Strength.

I wear it for slash specs on high-Defence targets, like a Zamorakian godsword spec or a slash spec at the Corporeal Beast. Against a low-Defence target the Ultor ring's extra Strength does more. Test both in the OSRS DPS calculator with your weapon.
The Whisperer drops the Bellator vestige at 1/512. The finished ring costs about 17.5M.
The Brimstone ring gives melee +4 Strength and +4 to every melee attack style. That is half the Strength of a Berserker ring (i), so it loses on a melee-only trip.

I wear it for melee only when the same trip also uses ranged or magic, because it adds to all three styles. You make it from the Hydra's eye, fang and heart, dropped by the Alchemical Hydra at 95 Slayer. It costs about 1.9M.
The Ring of Shadows gives +4 to every melee attack style, +2 Strength and +2 Prayer. In terms of stats, it is the weakest Strength ring on this list.

The Ring of Shadows is worth wearing because it is cheap to lose. It comes from Desert Treasure II, and the Mysterious Bandit in the Ancient Vault sells a replacement for 75K. At Wilderness bosses, I would rather lose 75K than a 3.9M Berserker ring.
The Tyrannical ring (i) adds +8 crush attack for Dragon warhammer and Elder maul specs. It costs about 191K plus an imbue.
.webp)
A Dragon warhammer spec only drains Defence when it hits. The extra accuracy makes the first spec more likely to land, so I swap the ring in for the spec and back out after. Callisto drops it at 1/512 and Artio at 1/716.
The Treasonous Ring (i) is the stab version of the Tyrannical Ring (i). It gives +8 stab attack for about 80K plus an imbue.
.webp)
I swap it in for one stab spec when a miss would cost me the kill, then take it off. Venenatis drops it at 1/512 and Spindel at 1/716. For normal stab damage, the Ultor ring or Berserker ring (i) does more.
At 52K plus an imbue, the Warrior ring (i) is the cheapest slash accuracy ring, with +8 slash attack. It replaces the Bellator ring for Corporeal Beast specs on accounts that cannot afford 17.5M.
.webp)
Dagannoth Rex drops it at 1/128, like the Berserker ring. You can also chisel it into a Warrior icon, the first step to a Bellator ring.
The Venator ring is the best ranged ring in OSRS, and the Archers ring (i) gives 80% of its accuracy for about 2.1M. The Venator ring is the only ring with Ranged Strength, the stat that raises your max hit.
| Rank | Ring | Requirements | Ranged Attack | Ranged Strength | Ranged Defence | Prayer | Tradeable | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Venator ring | One Leviathan kill | +10 | +2 | +0 | +0 | Yes | 39.8M | All ranged |
| 2 | Archers ring (i) | None | +8 | +0 | +8 | +0 | Base only | 2.1M + imbue | Ranged under 5M |
| 3 | Brimstone ring | None | +4 | +0 | +4 | +0 | Yes | 1.9M | Hybrid PvM and PKing |
| 4 | Ring of shadows | Desert Treasure II | +4 | +0 | +0 | +2 | No | 75K to replace | Wilderness bossing |
GE prices checked October 2026.
The Venator ring gives +10 Ranged attack and +2 Ranged Strength, and no other ring has any Ranged Strength. It is the ranged ring to own once you have about 39.8M.

The Leviathan drops the Venator vestige at 1/768. Like the other three Desert Treasure II rings, it cannot be imbued.
The Archers ring (i) is the ranged ring I buy first. It gives +8 Ranged attack and +8 Ranged defence for about 2.1M plus an imbue.
.webp)
Dagannoth Supreme drops it at 1/128. The Venator ring adds two points of accuracy and two of Ranged Strength for about 38M more. I upgraded my bow and armour first, in the order from our ranged armour progression guide.
The Brimstone ring gives +4 Ranged attack, half of what an Archers ring (i) gives. On a ranged-only trip I leave it in the bank.

The Brimstone ring earns its slot at fights where you swap between ranged and magic, like Zulrah, because one ring covers both styles. It also adds +4 Strength if you bring a melee switch.
The Ring of shadows is the ranged ring I take into the Wilderness. It gives +4 Ranged attack and +2 Prayer.

The Ring of shadows also teleports to the Ancient Vault and the four Desert Treasure II boss areas once you add each tablet. Each charge costs one blood, soul, death and law rune, up to 1,000 charges.
The Magus ring is the best magic ring in OSRS, and the Seers ring (i) is the cheapest good one at about 799K. Only these two rings add magic damage, which boosts every spell you cast.
| Rank | Ring | Requirements | Magic Attack | Magic Damage | Magic Defence | Prayer | Tradeable | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Magus ring | One Duke Sucellus kill | +15 | +2% | +0 | +0 | Yes | 20.9M | All magic |
| 2 | Seers ring (i) | None | +12 | +0.5% | +12 | +0 | Base only | 799K + imbue | Magic under 1M |
| 3 | Brimstone ring | None | +6 | +0% | +6 | +0 | Yes | 1.9M | NH PKing |
| 4 | Ring of shadows | Desert Treasure II | +5 | +0% | +5 | +2 | No | 75K to replace | Wilderness bossing |
GE prices checked October 2026.
Duke Sucellus drops the vestige for the Magus ring, the magic ring for barraging, Tombs of Amascut and every magic boss. It gives +15 Magic attack and +2% magic damage for about 20.9M.

The Magus ring's 2% damage is four times what the Seers ring (i) gives. The vestige drops at 1/720.
The Seers ring (i) gives +12 Magic attack and +0.5% magic damage for about 799K plus an imbue. It is the magic ring I would pick for a mid-level account bursting Slayer tasks.
.webp)
Dagannoth Prime drops it at 1/128. It is three points of accuracy and 1.5% damage behind the Magus ring, for about 4% of the price.
The Brimstone ring gives magic +6 attack and an effect no other ring has. On magic attacks, it has a 25% chance to lower the target's Magic defence roll by 10% for that hit.

The Brimstone ring's Magic defence effect is why I wear it for NH PKing, where you swap between all three styles every few ticks. For magic PvM, the Seers ring (i) gives twice the accuracy plus magic damage for less money.
The Ring of shadows gives +5 Magic attack, +5 Magic defence and +2 Prayer. It can beat the Magus ring in one place: Wilderness bosses, where losing a 20.9M ring is a real risk.

The Ring of shadows' +5 Magic defence also helps against magic attacks from Wilderness bosses and PKers. You need Desert Treasure II finished to buy a replacement.
The Lightbearer is the best ring for special attacks, and the Ring of suffering (i) is the best ring for tanking. The Ring of the gods (i), Granite ring (i) and Ring of recoil each do one job for 1.1M or less, plus an imbue.
| Ring | Requirements | Main Bonus | Prayer | Tradeable | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Lightbearer | None | Doubles special attack regeneration | +0 | Yes | 4.7M | Spec-heavy raids |
| Ring of suffering (i) | 75 Hitpoints | +20 all defences, recoil when charged | +4 | Base only | 19.2M + imbue | Tanking |
| Ring of the gods (i) | None | Holy wrench effect | +8 | Base only | 1.1M + imbue | Prayer |
| Granite ring (i) | 50 Defence, 50 Strength | +24 Ranged defence, -4 Magic defence | +0 | Base only | 18K + imbue | Cheap Ranged defence |
| Ring of recoil | None | Reflects 10% + 1 of damage taken | +0 | Yes | 918 GP | Cheap recoil |
GE prices checked October 2026.
The Lightbearer is for fights where special attacks do the most work, like Tombs of Amascut. It gives no stats. It regenerates special attack energy twice as fast: 10% every 15 seconds, or 100% in 2 minutes 30 seconds.
At Tombs of Amascut I spec often and have downtime between rooms, so the extra specs beat the Ultor ring's Strength. At Theatre of Blood the Scythe of Vitur does the damage with little downtime, so I wear the Ultor ring there.

The Lightbearer costs about 4.7M and drops from Tombs of Amascut. When skilling, it also doubles how often you can use a dragon tool's special attack.
The Ring of suffering (i) is the tanking ring. Its +20 to every defensive bonus is the most defence on any ring. Charge it with rings of recoil and it becomes a Ring of suffering (ri) that reflects damage.
.webp)
The Ring of suffering needs 75 Hitpoints, so a low-level pure cannot wear it. You make it by casting Lvl-7 Enchant on a zenyte ring at 93 Magic.
I wear it as the God Wars Dungeon tank, at Zulrah for the snakelings and in the Inferno. Each ring of recoil adds 40 charges, up to 100,000.
The Ring of the gods (i) gives +8 Prayer and works as a holy wrench. Prayer potions and super restores then give more Prayer per dose: at 99 Prayer, a super restore dose gives 34 points instead of 32.
.webp)
Vet'ion drops it at 1/512 and Calvar'ion at 1/716. It costs about 1.1M plus an imbue. I use it on long prayer-flicking fights where an offensive ring would not change the kill time.
The Granite ring (i) gives +24 Ranged defence when imbued, for about 18K plus a 500,000-point imbue. Grotesque Guardians drop it at 1/500.
.webp)
The Granite ring is the only ring with a Defence requirement, 50 Defence and 50 Strength, so a pure cannot wear it. I pick it over a Ring of suffering (i) only on an account without 75 Hitpoints or the money.
The Ring of recoil is a 918 GP ring that hits back. When something damages you, it returns 10% of that damage plus 1, up to 40 damage before it breaks.

At Zulrah it does the Ring of suffering (ri)'s job for less, killing snakelings with recoil. It is also the cheapest ring to risk in PvP. You make it with Lvl-1 Enchant on a sapphire ring at 7 Magic.
The Ring of life, Ring of wealth (i) and Efaritay's aid have no useful combat bonus. Each does one job: escaping death, getting clue drops and fighting vampyres.
The Ring of life teleports you to your respawn point when an attack leaves you at 10% Hitpoints or less. It breaks after one use. It costs about 1,752 GP, and every Hardcore Ironman should wear one, since one death ends hardcore status.

The Ring of life will not save you from a single hit that takes you from above 10% to zero.
The Ring of wealth (i) is for Wilderness bosses and hellhounds when you want clue scrolls. In the Wilderness it doubles the chance of a clue scroll drop. The unimbued ring costs about 11K.
.webp)
Efaritay's aid is for fighting vampyres in Darkmeyer and the Sanguinesti region. Against tier 1 vampyres, every weapon deals 10% more damage. Silver weapons, like the Ivandis flail or Blisterwood flail, also get +15% accuracy.

Against tier 2 and 3 vampyres, both bonuses apply only to silver weapons. The ring lasts 200 successful hits. At about 2,074 GP it is the cheapest damage boost in this guide, but it only works on vampyres.
For general bossing and Slayer, wear the Ultor, Venator or Magus ring for your combat style. The five exceptions are special attack fights, tanking, recoil, prayer and the Wilderness.
| Situation | Ring I wear | Cheaper swap | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Melee Slayer, training and general bossing | Ultor ring | Berserker ring (i) | Strength is the only ring stat every melee hit uses |
| Theatre of Blood with a Scythe of Vitur | Ultor ring | Berserker ring (i) | Little downtime for spec regeneration to pay off |
| Tombs of Amascut | Lightbearer | Lightbearer | Specs between rooms beat four points of Strength |
| Dragon warhammer or Elder maul spec | Tyrannical ring (i) | Tyrannical ring (i) | The Defence drain only lands on a hit |
| Slash spec on a high-Defence boss | Bellator ring | Warrior ring (i) | +20 slash accuracy where misses are the problem |
| Ranged bossing and Slayer | Venator ring | Archers ring (i) | Best accuracy plus the only Ranged Strength on a ring |
| Zulrah | Ring of suffering (ri) | Ring of recoil | Recoil damage kills the snakelings |
| Inferno | Ring of suffering (ri) | Ring of the gods (i) | Defence and recoil across long waves |
| Fortis Colosseum | Ultor ring | Berserker ring (i) | Waves die faster to Strength than to Defence |
| God Wars Dungeon tank role | Ring of suffering (i) | Ring of suffering | +20 to every defence |
| Barraging and bursting Slayer | Magus ring | Seers ring (i) | Accuracy plus magic damage |
| Wilderness bosses | Ring of shadows | Ring of shadows | 75K to replace |
| NH PKing (switching all three styles) | Brimstone ring | Ring of shadows | Bonuses to all three styles plus the magic effect |
| Pure melee PKing | Berserker ring (i) | Ring of recoil | Points refunded if you lose the imbue |
| Prayer-flicking fights with no offensive ring needed | Ring of the gods (i) | Ring of the gods | +8 Prayer and more Prayer per dose |
| Hardcore Ironman anywhere risky | Ring of life | Ring of life | Teleports you out at 10% Hitpoints |
| Vampyre Slayer tasks | Efaritay's aid | Efaritay's aid | +10% damage; +15% accuracy with silver weapons |
The imbued Berserker, Archers and Seers rings suit every combat account build, and mains and ironmen upgrade to the Desert Treasure II rings. Every ring in this guide except the Granite ring has no Defence requirement, so pures can wear the top rings.
| Account build | Melee ring | Ranged ring | Magic ring | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main, under 10M | Berserker ring (i) | Archers ring (i) | Seers ring (i) | All three cost about 6.8M before imbues |
| Main, end game | Ultor ring | Venator ring | Magus ring | Needs one kill of each Desert Treasure II boss |
| Ironman | Berserker ring (i), then Ultor ring | Archers ring (i), then Venator ring | Seers ring (i), then Magus ring | Dagannoth Kings first, imbue at Nightmare Zone or Soul Wars |
| Hardcore Ironman | Same as Ironman | Same as Ironman | Same as Ironman | Ring of life in the inventory for risky trips |
| 1 Defence pure | Berserker ring (i) or Ultor ring | Archers ring (i) | Seers ring (i) | No Ring of suffering under 75 Hitpoints, no Granite ring |
| Zerker (45 Defence) | Berserker ring (i) or Ultor ring | Archers ring (i) | Seers ring (i) | Same rings as a main, risk only what you can replace |
| Skiller (level 3) | None | None | None | Celestial ring for Mining, Lightbearer for dragon tool specs |
| Free-to-play | None | None | None | No F2P ring has a combat bonus |
A main should buy the three imbued Fremennik rings first, for about 6.8M before imbues. Then replace each one with its Desert Treasure II ring, starting with the style you use most. The Ultor ring costs the most, so even on a melee account I often buy the 20.9M Magus ring first.
An ironman cannot use the Grand Exchange, so the Dagannoth Kings come first. Rex, Supreme and Prime each drop their ring at 1/128. Imbue them with Nightmare Zone points or Soul Wars Zeal Tokens.
Each Desert Treasure II ring then needs its vestige, the icon chiselled from the matching Fremennik ring and three chromium ingots from the same bosses. The Ultor and Bellator rings also need 500 blood runes. The Ring of Suffering needs a zenyte shard from demonic gorillas, 89 Crafting and 93 Magic.
A 1 Defence pure can wear the Berserker ring (i), the Ultor ring and the Bellator ring, because none of them has a Defence requirement. A 1 Defence pure can also complete Desert Treasure II.
A pure cannot use the Ring of Suffering, which needs 75 Hitpoints, or the Granite ring, which needs 50 Defence.
In PvP I only risk the imbued Berserker ring, because the imbue points come back if you die.
No free-to-play ring gives a combat bonus. Every F2P ring, from the Ring of Forging to the Ring of 3rd Age, has zero offensive and defensive stats. The Fremennik rings, the Desert Treasure II rings, and the Ring of Recoil are all members-only.
I buy the imbued Fremennik ring for my main style first. Next comes the Lightbearer, then the Desert Treasure II ring for that style.
| Budget | Ring | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 1M | Seers ring (i) | ~799K + imbue | Cheapest ring that adds magic damage |
| 1M to 5M | Berserker ring (i) or Archers ring (i) | ~3.9M or ~2.1M + imbue | Two-thirds of the BiS bonus for each style |
| 5M | Lightbearer | ~4.7M | Second ring for raids and spec-heavy bosses |
| 20M | Magus ring | ~20.9M | Cheapest of the three BiS rings |
| 40M | Venator ring | ~39.8M | Only ring with Ranged Strength |
| 100M and up | Ultor ring | ~109M | Highest Strength bonus on any ring |
GE prices checked October 2026.
The best ring in OSRS is the Ultor ring for melee, the Venator ring for ranged and the Magus ring for magic. The Ultor ring gives +12 Strength for about 109M. The Venator ring gives +10 Ranged and +2 Ranged Strength for about 39.8M. The Magus ring gives +15 Magic and +2% magic damage for about 20.9M.
The Berserker ring (i) is the best cheap melee ring in OSRS. It gives +8 Strength for about 3.9M plus an imbue of 650,000 Nightmare Zone points or 260 Soul Wars Zeal Tokens. That is two-thirds of the Ultor ring's +12 Strength for about 4% of its 109M price.
The Bellator ring beats the Ultor ring only when slash accuracy limits your damage, like slash specs on high-Defence bosses. It gives +20 Slash and +6 Strength. The Ultor ring gives +12 Strength and wins for general melee, Slayer and Theatre of Blood. Check your weapon in the OSRS DPS calculator.
Use the Lightbearer instead of the Ultor ring when special attacks decide the fight, and there is downtime to regenerate energy, like Tombs of Amascut. It doubles special attack regeneration to 10% every 15 seconds. At Theatre of Blood, where the Scythe of Vitur does the damage, the Ultor ring wins.
Yes, a 1 Defence pure can wear the Ultor ring, because it has no Defence requirement. The pure must have killed Vardorvis at least once, and a 1 Defence pure can complete Desert Treasure II. The two rings a pure cannot use are the Ring of Suffering and the Granite Ring.
Use the Ring of Suffering (ri) for the Inferno. It gives +20 to every defensive bonus and +4 Prayer, and its recoil adds damage across long waves. It needs 75 Hitpoints to wear. The Ring of the Gods (i), with +8 Prayer and a holy wrench effect, is the cheaper swap.
