OSRS P2P Ranged Guide: Fastest Way From 1-99
In this guide we will learn how to level up from 1-99 ranged in the fastest and most efficient way possible, without getting lost in AFK methods.
Throughout our combined 100+ years as a team playing this game, we can confidently say we have a lot of experience when it comes to training skills. Today we're going to talk about one of the quickest training methods for any skill throughout the entirety of OSRS. Let's talk about chinchompas, shall we?
This is a very common term used by a lot of experienced players. It refers to the use of chinchompas as a method of training range. As chinchompas are a multi-target weapon, they boast the highest exp achievable in the game when it comes to any combat skill. At the upper limit, training with chins can bring you upwards of 1 million+ exp per hour. While these experience rates are achievable, there are a lot of variables, including gear, type of chinchompa and locations used. Before we really deep-dive into the methods, let's talk about some requirements and what cost this might bring on your way to achieving the levels you want.
There are 3 types of chinchompas currently in OSRS.
Grey chinchompa: Level 45 range requirement ![]()
Red chinchompa: level 55 range requirement ![]()
Black chinchompa: level 65 range requirement ![]()
You can technically utilize this method as early as 45 range. Although at this level, it won't be very cost-effective as the gp you spend per exp will be very high (we’ll talk more about cost per exp in a moment). The important thing here is to utilize a multi-combat area with a high number of aggressive monsters. A chinchompa can hit up to 11 targets at once, so a minimum of 11 monsters spawning (preferably more) is required. I would also suggest at least 43 prayer for the protect from melee prayer to negate all damage easily.
Note: I have built many low prayer accounts in the past and have some additional hidden methods that can be used to chin without overhead prayers, which I’ll break down a little later in the guide.
In my experience, the most effective areas are the post-quest monkey tunnels from both Monkey Madness I & Monkey Madness II. These are very commonly used by players because the monsters are aggressive and spawn quickly and in abundance.
I would strongly recommend completing at least Monkey Madness I before attempting this method, with Monkey Madness II being another massive increase to exp per hour too. A little extra time skilling/questing to complete MM2 will save you a LOT of time and effort on your journey to 99 range. If you need any help with skills or questing, you can check out our services here.
A little later in this guide, I will run through some alternatives for people wanting early chinning gains before unlocking either of these quests.
In my experience there are a lot of variables when it comes to the overall cost of using chins as a primary training method, but I would argue this is one of the most important things to know before you commit to training this way.
As far as training goes, this one can be reasonably expensive. Although, in my experience, the time you save from training this way totally outweighs the cost. Most of us are getting much older, so our free time to play this game becomes ever more scarce, which means maximizing our ‘gains’ vs ‘time spent’ is very important.
We will talk about gear in just a moment, but as your gear progresses, you will see a noticeable change in GP spent per XP gained. You will also see a large jump in exp per chin in the Monkey Madness II tunnels because of the amount of monkeys in the tunnel. With correct stacking techniques/use of alts (explained later), you will always be consistently hitting 11 monkeys.
Because there are so many variables, I will break down the average amount of chins used per account build (for each chin type) to get to 99.
You can start as low as 45 range with grey chinchompas. From my experience testing these methods, I personally prefer to cannon or manually train to level 70, this saves a lot of wasted chinchompas at low range levels with minimal accuracy.

Most players opt for Red Chinchompas - although they are a little less experience per hour, they are still extremely quick and are far more cost effective. That being said, if you don’t mind using a little extra gold (you can check out our gold selling here), then for a few extra dollars in value, you can get the grind done much quicker!
I’m going to show you the best in slot gear for each build type. I've assumed you don’t have a quiver at this point - but if somehow you do, always use that!
This probably goes without saying, but you can downgrade any of this gear if needed. We could go back and forth all day with different gear variations, so I’ll just list the best, and if you have to change the anguish to a fury, the masori down to blessed hides, that’s totally fine! Just be sure to compensate with a few extra chins to still reach your goals!
The extra gear does go a long way, so if you need some assistance with obtaining gear or the money to buy it – you can use the link above and we can make sure you’re fully kitted and ready to go!

NOTE: A common mistake made by a lot of players is using the salve amulet (ei) to chin in the Monkey Madness I tunnels. Although it does give 20% accuracy and damage, it only gives the damage bonus to the original target, so the other 8 monsters you hit won’t receive the bonus %. It can still help provide accuracy for your chins thrown in the early levels, but I would suggest not using it after you reach 70+ range, as you’ll have better accuracy/gear. At that point, anguish will be better for overall damage per chinchompa.

Now you have all of your requirements, chins and gear ready to go - let’s teach you how to do it!
Gamer tip: For the best experience rates per hour, you want to use ‘Medium fuse’ for the faster attack speed but if you have a low range level and start chinning early, you can use ‘Short fuse’ for 100% accuracy for hitting enemies 0-3 tiles away (which you will be). See the image below to make sure you’re using the right style:
I will break this down into two different methods:
You need to have completed the quest up until the point where you can access the island, then you’re able to run into the tunnels and get started. I would suggest completing the quest, or at least until you have a monkey gree-gree made, so you can get to the spot in peace. For this section, I will assume the quest is complete, if it isn’t, then follow the steps you took in the quest to get to the dungeon and pick up from there!
Use your ape atoll teleport tablet to get to the ape atoll dungeon. From there follow this map to get to your chinning spot:

You will stand here and the monkeys will come over to you whenever they spawn. At the start of your trip you won’t have the full 9 targets, so your exp will be much lower. Whenever the screen shakes and the cave has a small ‘earthquake’, it will revive the bones on the floor to spawn another monkey, but it is limited to 1x revival per tile. To increase your exp, you can collect some bones and place them on the floor manually in different spots, so more monkeys will spawn. This will keep you at the consistent 9 targets more often. More targets = more exp. I have included a small GIF of moving the monkey bones below, as an example.

Every 10 minutes you will need to reset the aggression of the monkeys. Simply run east down either of the tunnels all the way to the next cave, then return back. If you are using runelite, you can use the following plugin:![]()
If you use this, you can also use the below option to see area lines of aggression:
You will now have on screen a countdown until your aggression ends, and yellow lines on the ground showing aggression areas. Simply run past one of the lines on the floor when the timer ends, then back to your spot. I have also included a GIF of that below.

Simply drink your potions, keep your health above zero and enjoy the massive exp gains.
I cannot express enough how much I would advise you to wait until after Monkey Madness II to chin your range. This method is not only much better exp per hour/per chinchompa, but also more relaxed as there is no need for manually picking up bones for better experience rates.
After you’ve completed MM2, grab your light source (and the inventory setup above) and head to any gnome glider. I personally use my POH to go to the duel arena, so I can hit my pool on the way, then head straight west to the glider. Once you’re at your glider of choice, you want to click the following option:
From there, you will head south and go straight down the dungeon entrance. It can be hard to spot, but here’s another image showing it for you:
From here, each player has a random path to get to the best chinning spot. It will be the same as the one you followed during the quest, and will always stay the same for your account. Simply follow the image below, if you fail on an obstacle and it gives you a chatbox message saying you’ve gone the wrong way, follow the same path back up to that point, then take a different obstacle and continue. Luckily it is only a few obstacles away.
Once you’re down the hole, follow the path to the east, go to the spot shown on the image below.
There are two options here:
Option 1) 2 Alts required. You will stand in the same spot with auto retaliate on and simply drink potions. For this spot, you will want to have 2x alt accounts following each other in front of your chinning account, which will stack the monkeys so that you don’t have to do it manually. Both alts will also need MM2 completed, and will have to stand down there with protect from melee up until they have lost monkey aggression, so bring a few prayer potions/food. I have attached a GIF below to show you how the alts will look, just place them directly south of your chin account:

Option 2) No alts required. You will use the same spot, but instead of using alts to stack, you will simply run back and forth between the two tiles shown in this clip below:

Every 10 minutes you will need to reset the aggression of the monkeys. Simply run west back through the tunnel all the way to the rope area, then return back.

If you haven’t completed Monkey Madness I or II and would still like to chin - or if you have an account without overheads and would like a method to chin in the MM1 tunnels, this is the section for you!
In my experience, if you’re trying to build an overall well rounded account, it can be very beneficial to chin your way through some slayer levels. A lot of your low levelled slayer monsters can be good chinning alternatives. You can do these either on-task on your slayer grind, or off-task (assuming you’ve got the slayer level). We’ll be assuming you’re off task for chinning range long-term here - if you’re looking for an on-task guide, you can check out our slayer training guide right here!
Head to the Catacombs of Kourend and follow the path below to get to jellies:
The gear you use here will be the same as you use for chins. You will use the same method described above for the first spot of MM2 tunnels. You will either bring darts to tag the jellies, or use goading potions (much more reclined).
You will stand on one of the two tiles shown in the GIF below, then run between the two tiles north/south to stack the jellies. Then simply throw your chins, drink your potions and enjoy the exp.

Head to the Catacombs of Kourend and follow the path below to get to dust devils:
For your gear here, you must use a slayer helmet or facemask. Every other slot will be filled with your best in slot chinning gear, as above. If you’re a main and using void to chin, you will replace it with masori for this - although I’m assuming that most mains with elite void and masori won’t ever be using this method to chin, so won’t go into much more detail than that. Your inventory will be exactly the same as the jellies above.

You will stand on one of the two tiles shown in the GIF below, then run between the two tiles north/south to stack the dust devils (shooting them all with darts to lure if you didn’t bring goading potions).

Then simply throw your chins, drink your potions and enjoy the exp.
I have used this method to build many no-overhead pking accounts in the past. The method itself is similar to the MM1 chinning method, but we’ll use a slightly different inventory setup and a different spot, so we can safespot the monkeys and negate the use of protect from melee. I strongly advise having a monkey gree-gree for this, so you can get to the spot without using all of your food.
First of all, your inventory will look like this:
You will have food instead of prayer potions, and will simply use them to heal the damage from your divine ranging potions & also from the falling rocks damage.
You will then follow the same path as the earlier MM1 chinning method, but will stop at a slightly earlier cave, as shown below:

You will then stand directly behind these rocks:
From here, you will simply drink your goading potions, your ranging potions, and eat a food whenever you need to. Outside of that, just throw your chins at the stack and watch the experience rise.
Note: You can skip using goading potions, and instead reset the aggro of the monkeys as in the above MM1 chinning guide. This will however use some food, so will mean you have to bank more often.
That should cover absolutely everything you will ever need to know about chinning! Remember, we’re always here to help with anything you need. Just open up a chat window and we’ll be happy to assist you with anything you ever need.
Happy chompa throwing!
