OSRS Magic Weapon Progression: What to Buy from Level 1 to 99
OSRS magic weapon progression from 1 to 99 Magic, covering the key upgrades from early-game staves to powerful end-game weapons.
Last updated October 2026. Game data checked 9 October 2026 and GE prices checked October 2026. Includes the 17 June 2026 Trouver System Rework and the 7 October 2026 Pete Kayer's Challenges update.
The best capes in OSRS are the Infernal cape for melee (+8 Strength) and Dizana's quiver for ranged (+18 Ranged). For magic, wear the imbued god cape (+2% magic damage). Get the Fire cape first. In F2P, a 328 GP black cape matches every other cape.
You cannot buy the best capes in the game. The Infernal cape, Dizana's quiver and the imbued god capes are untradeable, so each one means beating a challenge: the Inferno, the Fortis Colosseum or Mage Arena II.
I ranked each cape by its equipment bonuses, then how hard it is to earn, then what it costs to replace. The bonuses come from the game's equipment data, the same table the OSRS DPS calculator reads, checked on 9 October 2026.
I did not run a DPS benchmark for this guide. Cape bonuses range from +1 to +18, so I compare them directly. The Ardougne cloak 4 helps two styles, so it appears in both lists.
Prices are 24-hour Grand Exchange averages from October 2026. For an untradeable cape, the Price column shows what you pay or do to earn it. The PvP section shows what you pay to repair it.
Prices were checked in October 2026, when this guide was published, and they move with Grand Exchange trends. Check the live price yourself before you buy anything expensive.
The Infernal cape is the best melee cape in OSRS, and the Fire cape is the one to earn first. The other three melee capes each win in one case: crush, stab or no requirements.
| Rank | Cape | Requirements | Strength | Melee Attack | Defence (all styles) | Prayer | Tradeable | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Infernal cape | Defeat TzKal-Zuk in the Inferno | +8 | +4 all styles | +12 | +2 | No | Untradeable | All melee |
| 2 | Fire cape | Defeat TzTok-Jad in the Fight Caves | +4 | +1 all styles | +11 | +2 | No | Untradeable | Melee until the Inferno |
| 3 | Mythical cape | Dragon Slayer II | +1 | +6 crush | +8 | +1 | No | 10K from the Myths' Guild | Crush accuracy |
| 4 | Ardougne cloak 4 | Elite Ardougne Diary | +0 | +6 stab | +6 stab and Magic only | +6 | No | Free | Stab and Prayer |
| 5 | Obsidian cape | None | +0 | +0 | +9 | +0 | Yes | ~469K | Defence before the Fire cape |
GE prices checked October 2026. Replacement prices are what Perdu or the item's shop charges after you have earned the cape once.
The Infernal cape is the melee cape to aim for once your gear can handle the Inferno. Its +8 Strength is double the Fire cape's, and it adds +4 to every melee attack style.
You earn it by surviving all 69 waves of the Inferno and defeating TzKal-Zuk. To enter, you give TzHaar-Ket-Keh one Fire cape.

The Inferno is the hardest solo fight in the game, so I finish the rest of my melee setup first. If Zuk keeps ending your runs, we can get the Infernal cape on your account.
Every account should get a Fire cape, including pures and ironmen. Its +4 Strength and +11 to every defence make it the strongest melee cape a mid-level account can earn.

You earn it by clearing all 63 waves of the TzHaar Fight Caves and killing TzTok-Jad. If you and Jad die on the same tick, you do not get the cape. It is also the entry fee for the Inferno.
If Jad keeps beating you, our Fire cape service can get the cape for you.
The Mythical cape has +6 crush attack, the highest crush bonus of any cape. It is for crush weapons on an account without an Infernal cape.

You can wear it after Dragon Slayer II, and Jack sells it for 10K at the top of the Myths' Guild. It also gives unlimited teleports to the guild. Compared with a Fire cape, it gives up 3 Strength for 5 crush accuracy, so I only wear it when I miss too often with crush.
The Ardougne cloak 4 gives melee +6 stab attack and +6 Prayer. That is the most Prayer of any combat cape in this guide.

You claim it after the Elite Ardougne Diary. It gives unlimited teleports to the Ardougne Monastery and the Ardougne farm patch. I use it with stab weapons when Strength matters less, and on long prayer-flicking trips.
The Obsidian cape is the best defensive cape with no requirements. It gives +9 to every defence and no offensive bonus, for about 469K on the Grand Exchange.

The TzHaar shop in Mor Ul Rek also sells it for Tokkul. I wear it only until I have a Fire cape, which gives two more defence plus Strength and Prayer. It also keeps you warm at Wintertodt.
The blessed Dizana's quiver is the best ranged cape in OSRS, and Ava's assembler is the one to earn on the way there. Only Dizana's quiver, blessed or not, and Ava's assembler add Ranged Strength, the stat that raises your max hit.
| Rank | Cape | Requirements | Ranged Attack | Ranged Strength | Ranged Defence | Prayer | Tradeable | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Blessed Dizana's quiver | 75 Ranged, 150,000 sunfire splinters | +18 | +3 | +0 | +0 | No | Untradeable | End-game ranged |
| 2 | Dizana's quiver | 75 Ranged, defeat Sol Heredit | +18 | +3 | +0 | +0 | No | Untradeable | Ranged before the blessing |
| 3 | Ava's assembler | 70 Ranged, Dragon Slayer II, Vorkath's head | +8 | +2 | +2 | +0 | No | Untradeable | Ranged until the Colosseum |
| 4 | Mixed hide cape | 60 Ranged, 50 Defence | +5 | +0 | +1 | +0 | Yes | ~20K | Accounts without Animal Magnetism |
| 5 | Ava's accumulator | 50 Ranged, Animal Magnetism | +4 | +0 | +0 | +0 | No | 999 GP and 75 steel arrows to replace | Ranged from 50 to 70 |
GE prices checked October 2026.
The blessed Dizana's quiver is the best ranged cape in OSRS. It has the same +18 Ranged attack and +3 Ranged Strength as the normal quiver. It also keeps Dizana's Sunfire for good: +10 Ranged accuracy and +1 Ranged Strength on arrows and bolts.

You bless a Dizana's quiver at a Shrine of Ralos with 150,000 sunfire splinters. At 346 GP each, that is about 51.9M. Splinters already charged into the quiver count toward the total. That is a long farm. If you would rather skip it, you can buy the splinters from our item store.
Blessing keeps any ammo saving Ava already added, and the quiver never needs charging again. On a PvP death it costs 400K to repair instead of 270K.
Dizana's quiver is the best ranged cape for accounts that can beat the Fortis Colosseum. Its +18 Ranged attack and +3 Ranged Strength are the highest of any cape, and it adds a second ammunition slot.
You earn it by defeating Sol Heredit at the end of the Colosseum's 12 waves, and you need 75 Ranged to wear it. The second slot holds bolts and arrows at once, or two kinds of bolt.

Charging it with sunfire splinters adds Dizana's Sunfire: +10 Ranged accuracy and +1 Ranged Strength on arrows and bolts. It does not work on darts, chinchompas or the Bow of Faerdhinen. Ava in Draynor Manor can also add the assembler's ammunition saving, and that does not use up your assembler.
Every account between Dragon Slayer II and the Colosseum should wear Ava's assembler. It gives +8 Ranged attack and +2 Ranged Strength, and it saves 80% of the ammunition you fire.
You make it by taking Vorkath's head, 75 mithril arrows and an Ava's accumulator to Ava. You need 70 Ranged to wear it. The Masori assembler is the same cape with a cosmetic kit.

If you lose one, Perdu sells a replacement for 7,000 GP and a Vorkath's head. Ava also takes 4,999 GP in place of an accumulator.
Metal chestplates and Ahrim's robetop stop every Ava's device from saving ammo. If your assembler stops working, check your body slot first.
The Mixed hide cape is the only tradeable ranged cape with an offensive bonus. It gives +5 Ranged attack and +1 Strength for about 20K, but it also has -15 Magic attack.

The Mixed hide cape needs 60 Ranged and 50 Defence, so pures cannot wear it. I pick it only on an account that has not done Animal Magnetism, so it has no Ava's device yet.
Ava's accumulator gives +4 Ranged attack and saves 72% of your ammunition. It is the ranged cape from 50 Ranged until you finish Dragon Slayer II.

You get it from the Animal Magnetism quest. If you lose it, Ava sells a replacement for 999 GP and 75 steel arrows. A 1 Defence pure cannot do Dragon Slayer II, so the accumulator is a pure's best ranged cape until the quiver.
The imbued god cape is the best magic cape in OSRS and the only cape with a magic damage bonus. The plain god cape covers you from 60 Magic until you can do Mage Arena II.
| Rank | Cape | Requirements | Magic Attack | Magic Damage | Magic Defence | Prayer | Tradeable | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Imbued god cape | 75 Magic, Mage Arena II | +15 | +2% | +15 | +0 | No | 250K to replace | All magic |
| 2 | God cape | 60 Magic, Mage Arena I | +10 | +0% | +10 | +0 | No | 23K to replace | Magic from 60 to 75 |
| 3 | Ardougne cloak 4 | Elite Ardougne Diary | +6 | +0% | +6 | +6 | No | Free | Magic with Prayer |
| 4 | Ghostly cloak | Curse of the Empty Lord | +5 | +0% | +5 | +0 | No | 15K to replace | Magic before Mage Arena I |
GE prices checked October 2026.
Once you have 75 Magic and Mage Arena II done, wear an imbued god cape for magic. It gives +15 Magic attack and +2% magic damage, and all four versions have the same stats.

You imbue a god cape during Mage Arena II, in level 56 Wilderness, using parts from the three followers you kill there. After that, Perdu sells replacements for 250K. If you would rather not fight the followers with PKers about, we can do Mage Arena II on your account.

The fourth version, the imbued ancient cape, came with the 7 October 2026 Pete Kayer's Challenges update. You make it with the ancient fabric from Pete Kayer's final challenge at Ferox Enclave. It differs from the other three in looks and in giving Zarosian protection in the God Wars Dungeon.
At RuneFest on 3 October 2026, Jagex teased a new best-in-slot magic cape tied to an autumn update called the Tower of Xorphoros. Until it releases, the imbued god cape is the one to get.
The god cape is the magic cape from 60 Magic until you can imbue it. It gives +10 Magic attack, and with the Charge spell it adds 50% damage to its god spell.

You get it from Mage Arena I by defeating Kolodion. The Saradomin, Zamorak and Guthix capes have the same stats. They differ only in God Wars Dungeon protection and their god spell. Perdu sells replacements for 23K.
The Ardougne cloak 4 gives magic +6 attack and +6 Prayer. That is less accuracy than a god cape, so I only wear it for magic before Mage Arena I, or when Prayer drain hurts more than missing.

The Ardougne cloak 4 costs nothing once the Elite Ardougne Diary is done. I keep it in the bank for its unlimited Ardougne teleports anyway.
The Ghostly cloak is a magic cape with +5 Magic attack and no stat requirements. You get it from the Curse of the Empty Lord miniquest, and Perdu sells replacements for 15K.

The Ghostly cloak's +5 is half the god cape's bonus. I wear it only before Mage Arena I, or on a pure that wants Magic accuracy and has nothing to lose.
The imbued god cape and the Fire cape are the best PKing capes, the cheapest two to repair. Since the 17 June 2026 Trouver System Rework, the five top capes break on a PvP death at or under level 20 Wilderness. Three of them break at any level, and you repair them at Perdu in Ferox Enclave.
| Cape | Death at or under level 20 Wilderness | Death over level 20 Wilderness | Repair fee (GP) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire cape | Breaks | Breaks | 150K |
| Imbued god cape | Breaks | Breaks | 96K |
| Ava's assembler | Breaks | Breaks | 240K |
| Infernal cape | Breaks | Lost, or breaks if Trouver-locked | 225K, or 500K once mangled |
| Dizana's quiver | Breaks, charges lost | Lost, or kept if Trouver-locked (ammo and charges lost) | 270K, or 400K for a blessed quiver |
Trouver-locking an Infernal cape or a quiver costs a Trouver parchment and 500K at Perdu. Since the 17 June 2026 rework, the lock stays on through every death. Perdu removes it on request and refunds the parchment and 95% of the fee.
To get an item locked, carry the item, a Trouver parchment and 500K in your inventory, then use the item on Perdu. He asks you to confirm the lock.

For NH fights, where both players switch between all three styles, I wear an imbued god cape. Its +2% magic damage boosts the freeze-and-hit combos those fights rely on. For melee-only fights, the Fire cape gives Strength for a 150K risk.
The Fire cape has one more PvP cost: it marks you as fiery, so pearl bolts (e) deal extra damage to you. The Infernal cape does not.
The Fire cape, Ava's assembler and the imbued god cape suit every account build, except that a pure uses Ava's accumulator. Pures lose the capes locked behind Dragon Slayer II.
| Account build | Melee | Ranged | Magic | What to watch |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Main | Fire cape, then Infernal cape | Ava's assembler, then Dizana's quiver | Imbued god cape | Sacrifice one Fire cape to enter the Inferno |
| Ironman | Fire cape, then Infernal cape | Ava's assembler, then Dizana's quiver | Imbued god cape | Obsidian cape from the TzHaar shop for Tokkul |
| Hardcore Ironman | Fire cape | Ava's assembler | God cape, then imbued god cape | Mage Arena II is in level 56 Wilderness |
| 1 Defence pure | Fire cape, then Infernal cape | Ava's accumulator, then Dizana's quiver | Imbued god cape | No Dragon Slayer II, so no Mythical cape or assembler |
| Zerker (45 Defence) | Fire cape | Ava's assembler | Imbued god cape | Check which quests your Defence cap allows |
A 1 Defence pure can earn the Fire cape, the Infernal cape, Dizana's quiver and the imbued god cape, because none of them has a Defence requirement.
Dragon Slayer II and Legends' Quest are not on the 1 Defence quest list. That rules out the Mythical cape, Ava's assembler and the Cape of Legends.
A pure on 1 Prayer can still get a Fire cape, but without protection prayers Jad is much harder.
An ironman earns the same top capes as a main, since none of them is tradeable. The difference is in the cheaper capes you wear before them.
An Ironman cannot buy an Obsidian cape on the Grand Exchange, so it comes from the TzHaar shop for Tokkul.
The Max cape, Soul cape, skillcapes, Crafting cape, Quest point cape and Cape of Legends are for Prayer, perks and cheap defence rather than damage.
The Max cape is the reward for level 99 in every skill. It gives +9 to every defence and +4 Prayer, plus the perks of the skillcapes it replaces.

You can combine it with the Fire cape, Infernal cape, Ava's assembler, Dizana's quiver or an imbued god cape, and it keeps that cape's combat stats.
99 in every skill is the longest grind in the game. If you want the cape without the grind, we offer a max cape service.
The Soul cape gives +8 Prayer, the highest Prayer bonus in the cape slot, and no other stats. It costs 2,500 Zeal Tokens at Soul Wars and needs 70 Prayer.

I use it on prayer-flicking fights where an offensive cape would not change the kill.
A skillcape gives +9 to every defence, and the trimmed version adds +4 Prayer. Each one has a perk, like the Defence cape's Ring of life effect or the Cooking cape stopping you burning food. Skillcapes are for utility, not combat, and all of them are members-only.

The Crafting cape is the skillcape for 99 Crafting. It gives +9 to every defence, +4 Prayer once trimmed, and unlimited teleports into the Crafting Guild. You buy it for 99K from the Master Crafter in the guild.

The Quest Point Cape is the reward for finishing every quest. It gives +9 to every defence and unlimited teleports to the Legends' Guild, one of the quickest routes to a fairy ring. You buy it for 99K from the Wise Old Man in Draynor Village.

The Quest point cape also takes 10,000 GP off every Nightmare Zone dream. The trimmed version needs every Achievement Diary as well.
The Cape of Legends gives +7 to every defence for 675 GP from the Legends' Guild. It is a cheaper Obsidian cape for accounts that have finished Legends' Quest.

I get the Fire cape and god cape first, then Ava's assembler after Dragon Slayer II, then the Infernal cape and the quiver once my gear is ready.
| Stage | Melee | Ranged | Magic |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early members | Obsidian cape (~469K) | Ava's accumulator at 50 Ranged | Ghostly cloak |
| Mid game | Fire cape | Ava's accumulator | God cape at 60 Magic |
| After Dragon Slayer II | Fire cape | Ava's assembler at 70 Ranged | Imbued god cape at 75 Magic |
| End game | Infernal cape | Dizana's quiver, blessed | Imbued god cape |
GE prices checked October 2026.
The best F2P cape in OSRS is whichever one you like the look of, because all 63 free-to-play capes have the same stats. Each gives +1 slash defence, +1 crush defence and +2 Ranged defence, with no offensive bonus for melee, ranged or magic.
I recommend the black cape. It costs about 328 GP on the Grand Exchange and goes with any armour colour. If you want the cheapest option, the red cape costs about 76 GP for the same stats.
| F2P cape | Stats | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Why pick it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Black cape | +1 slash, +1 crush, +2 Ranged defence | 328 | My pick; matches every armour set |
| Red cape and the other dyed capes | Same | From 76 | Cheapest way to fill the slot |
| Team capes (Team-1 to Team-50, i, x, zero) | Same | From about 862 (Team-1) | Clans wear matching numbers in the Wilderness |
| Castlewars cloaks (Saradomin, Zamorak) | Same | Not sold | Worn only inside Castle Wars games |
Team capes are the one F2P cape with a real use: clans wear matching numbers to spot each other in a multi fight. Every other cape in this guide, including the Obsidian cape and every skillcape, is members-only.
The best cape in OSRS is the Infernal cape for melee, Dizana's quiver for ranged and the imbued god cape for magic. The Infernal cape gives +8 Strength and +4 to every melee attack style. Dizana's quiver gives +18 Ranged attack and +3 Ranged Strength. The imbued god cape gives +15 Magic attack and +2% magic damage.
All 63 free-to-play capes in OSRS have the same stats: +1 slash defence, +1 crush defence and +2 Ranged defence. No F2P cape gives an offensive bonus, so the best one is the one you like. I recommend the black cape at about 328 GP. The red cape costs about 76 GP.
Yes, the Fire cape is worth getting on every melee account. It gives +4 Strength, +1 to every attack style, +11 to every defence and +2 Prayer. It is the second-best melee cape in OSRS, and the Inferno takes one Fire cape as an entry fee before you can earn the Infernal cape.
Yes, Dizana's quiver is better than Ava's assembler. It gives +18 Ranged attack and +3 Ranged Strength, against the assembler's +8 and +2. Charged with sunfire splinters, it adds +10 accuracy and +1 Ranged Strength to arrows and bolts. Ava can also give the quiver the assembler's 80% ammunition saving.
Yes, a 1 Defence pure can get the Infernal cape, because it has no Defence requirement. The pure must first earn a Fire cape to sacrifice, then clear all 69 Inferno waves and defeat TzKal-Zuk. With 1 Defence, monsters hit you far more often, so the run depends on prayer switching and movement.
