OSRS Melee Weapon Progression: What to Buy from Level 1 to 99
Find the right weapon for every level from 1 to 99 Attack, comparing low-level Scimitars to high-level weapons.
Last updated October 2026. Game data checked 9 October 2026 and GE prices checked October 2026. Includes the Sailing fish added on 19 November 2025 and the 7 October 2026 Pete Kayer's Challenges update.
The best healing food in OSRS is the marlin, at 24 Hitpoints for about 3,882 GP. For everyday bossing, buy sharks (20 Hitpoints, about 928 GP) and karambwans for combo eats. Monkfish are the value pick at 150 GP.
For PKing, use the triple eat: a shark or manta ray, then a Saradomin brew sip, then a karambwan, all in one game tick. At 99 Hitpoints that heals 54 to 56 before your opponent's next hit lands.
I ranked each food on four things, in this order: healing per slot, whether it can be combo eaten, cost per Hitpoint, and what it takes to catch and cook. Healing values, eat delays and requirements are from the game data, checked 9 October 2026.
Prices are 24-hour Grand Exchange averages from October 2026. The GP per Hitpoint column is the price divided by the heal: 928 ÷ 20 = 46.4 GP per Hitpoint for a shark. Saradomin brews heal by a percentage, so every brew figure in this guide assumes 99 Hitpoints, where one dose heals 16.
Prices were checked in October 2026, when this guide was published, and they move with Grand Exchange trends. Check the live price yourself before you buy anything expensive.
Eating in OSRS runs on two timers. If you know both, you can combo eat without wasting a click.
Eating adds no attack delay if your weapon is ready to attack. That is why I eat at the start of a Zulrah phase, before the first attack, instead of after it.
The best food for PvM is the shark for value and the marlin when you need the most healing per slot. Carry karambwans with either one for combo eats.
The list runs from the biggest heal to the smallest. The two combo foods sit where I rank them for bossing.
| Rank | Food | Heals (HP) | Combo food | Requirements (Ironman Only) | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | GP per HP | Best For |

The marlin heals 24 Hitpoints, the most of any single bite in OSRS. I bring it to raids and to fights where inventory space matters more than money.

Marlin came with Sailing on 19 November 2025. You catch it at 91 Fishing by deep sea trawling in the Northern Ocean, which needs an eternal brazier. Cooking it needs 91 Cooking, and it keeps burning until you wear a Cooking cape.
At about 3,882 GP it costs 161.8 GP per Hitpoint, more than three times a shark's 46.4.
Bluefin is my everyday high-end food. It heals 22 Hitpoints and restores 5 Prayer points, for about 1,732 GP.

The Prayer restore means fewer prayer potion sips on a long trip. You need 87 Fishing and 87 Cooking. Per Hitpoint it costs 78.7 GP, more than a manta ray, so I only pay for it when the Prayer saves me a potion slot.
I eat an anglerfish at the bank before a boss, because it can take you over your maximum Hitpoints. At 99 Hitpoints it heals 22 and can take you to 121.

The heal scales with your Hitpoints level. At 92 Hitpoints it heals 17, and the full 22 starts at 93. It costs about 1,625 GP and needs 82 Fishing and 84 Cooking.
The manta ray heals 22 Hitpoints for about 1,312 GP, or 59.6 GP per Hitpoint. I bring mantas when sharks would leave me two or three slots short.

The manta ray needs 81 Fishing and 91 Cooking. Dark crabs heal the same 22 for less, at about 1,243 GP, and tuna potatoes cost about 1,428 GP.
Sharks are what I stock for general bossing on any account: 20 Hitpoints for about 928 GP, or 46.4 GP per Hitpoint. More than 2.8 million traded on the Grand Exchange in the 24 hours I checked.

Sharks need 76 Fishing and 80 Cooking, and they pair with karambwans for double eats at bosses like Vorkath and Zulrah, where a big hit can land on any tick.
The cooked karambwan heals 18 Hitpoints and can be eaten in the same tick as the food before it. It only adds 2 ticks to your attack delay. At about 385 GP it costs 21.4 GP per Hitpoint.

I carry four to six karambwans to Zulrah and Vorkath, even when the rest of the inventory is sharks. You need 65 Fishing and the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest to catch them. To cook them safely you need 30 Cooking and a talk with Tinsay after the quest, or they come out poisonous.
Halibut is the second combo food, added with Sailing. It heals 20 Hitpoints, two more than a karambwan, and also adds only 2 ticks to your attack delay.

At about 2,184 GP it costs almost six times as much as a karambwan for 2 extra Hitpoints. I only use it in the biggest combo the game allows: marlin, then a brew sip, then halibut, for 60 Hitpoints in one tick at 99 Hitpoints. It needs 83 Fishing and 83 Cooking.
The cooked moonlight antelope heals 26 Hitpoints in total, but only 14 of that is instant. The other 12 lands 4.2 seconds (7 ticks) later, and eating another hunter meat first cancels it.

The 7-tick wait makes moonlight antelope a food for steady damage, like Slayer or Barrows. Against big hits, eat something that heals all at once. It costs about 2,806 GP. Cooking it needs 92 Cooking and 50 Hunters' Rumours.
The haddock heals 18 Hitpoints for about 458 GP and can take you over your maximum. The overheal is 20% of your Hitpoints level, up to 10.

At 99 Hitpoints you can eat to 109. It is the cheapest way I know to start a fight over full health. You need 73 Fishing and 73 Cooking.
Monkfish heals 16 Hitpoints for about 150 GP. That is 9.4 GP per Hitpoint, against a shark's 46.4.

I use monkfish for Slayer tasks and training, where nothing hits hard enough to need 20 per bite. You need 62 Fishing and the Swan Song quest to catch them.
The dark crab, tuna potato, Summer pie and giant krill fill four gaps in the main PvM ranking. They are a cheaper 22-heal fish, an easy 22-heal food to cook, a fast bite and a cheap Sailing fish.
The dark crab heals 22 Hitpoints for about 1,243 GP, the same heal as a manta ray for 69 GP less. You can only catch it in the Wilderness and the Resource Area, at 85 Fishing and 90 Cooking.

The tuna potato heals 22 Hitpoints for about 1,428 GP and needs only 68 Cooking. It is the easiest 22-heal food to make on an ironman with low Fishing.

The Summer pie heals 11 Hitpoints a bite, twice, and both bites have a 1-tick eat delay. Three bites heal 33 in the time a single manta ray takes. It costs about 624 GP and also restores 10% run energy.

Giant krill heals 17 Hitpoints for about 206 GP, or 12.1 GP per Hitpoint. It is a Sailing fish at 69 Fishing and 69 Cooking, and the cheapest food here that heals more than a monkfish.

A double eat is eating two healing items in the same game tick, so both heals land before the boss hits again. The standard PvM double eat is a manta ray then a karambwan, which heals 40 at once.

Have a look at the GIF below to see how double eating works. You eat both foods in the same game tick (0.6 seconds).
Every double eat follows one rule: the combo food goes second. A karambwan or halibut always goes last, and a Saradomin brew sip can follow any food. These are the four I use.
| Double eat | Click order | Heals at 99 HP | Attack delay | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shark and karambwan | Shark, then karambwan | 38 | 5 ticks | Best value at bosses |
| Manta ray and karambwan | Manta ray, then karambwan | 40 | 5 ticks | More healing per slot |
| Brew and karambwan | Brew sip, then karambwan | 34 | 2 ticks | Least attack delay |
| Marlin and halibut | Marlin, then halibut | 44 | 5 ticks | Biggest double eat |
The attack delay only applies when your weapon is already on cooldown. Two karambwans in a row do not work, because the first one's eat delay blocks the second.
I double eat when one more boss hit could kill me before a single fish would catch up. At Vorkath, that is after a dragonfire hit takes me under 50. At Zulrah, it is when venom and a ranged hit land on the same tick.
The brew and karambwan pair costs you the least damage, at 2 ticks of attack delay. Shark and karambwan heals more but costs 5 ticks, almost two attacks with a 3-tick weapon. Outside of an emergency, eat one fish at a time between attacks.
The Saradomin brew heals more per inventory slot than any other item in OSRS: 64 Hitpoints a potion at 99 Hitpoints. It drains your offensive stats, so every brew trip also needs super restores.
Each Saradomin brew dose heals 15% of your base Hitpoints plus 2, rounded down, and can overheal. At 99 Hitpoints that is 16 a dose. Each dose also raises Defence by 20% plus 2, which is +21 at 99 Defence.

The cost is your damage. Every dose lowers Attack, Strength, Ranged and Magic by 10% of their current level plus 2. At 99 that is -11 for the first dose. A super restore brings the drained stats back.
I use Saradomin brews in fights that last minutes, where Hitpoints per slot matters more than damage per hit. Those are the God Wars Dungeon tank role, Nex, the Corporeal Beast, Theatre of Blood, the Fight Caves, the Inferno and the Fortis Colosseum.
The other case is when something re-boosts your stats every 15 seconds. Overloads in the Chambers of Xeric and smelling salts in Tombs of Amascut do this. A brew sip just before the re-boost costs you almost no damage.
I do not use Saradomin brews for melee Slayer, training or short boss kills. Losing 11 Strength per dose costs more damage than the brew saves in food, and you need a restore slot to fix it.
Brews cost about 7,088 GP each, or 110.8 GP per Hitpoint at 99, more than twice a shark. A full inventory of 28 brews is about 198K.
One super restore dose undoes the drain from three brew doses, at any level from 70 to 99. At 99, three doses drain 30 levels and one restore dose gives back 32. If you start boosted with a super combat or ranging potion, you can fit a fourth brew dose before restoring.

For PvM I bring about one restore for every brew, because restores also cover Prayer. My usual order is two brew sips, then one restore sip, repeated through the fight. The spare restore doses go to Prayer.
On a brew trip, bring super restores instead of prayer potions. A super restore dose gives 32 Prayer points at 99 Prayer, one more than a prayer potion, and it also undoes the brew drain.
A super restore costs about 10,390 GP against 9,610 GP for a prayer potion. Prayer potions only make sense on trips with no brews, like Barrows. A holy wrench or a Ring of the gods (i) raises a super restore dose to 34 Prayer points at 99.

The sanfew serum, at about 21,014 GP, is a super restore that also cures poison. I bring one to the Fortis Colosseum, where there is no bank between waves. To make your own, Saradomin brews need 81 Herblore, toadflax and a crushed bird's nest. I got to 81 with our Herblore training guide.
Sharks and karambwans cover Zulrah and Vorkath, and Saradomin brews with super restores cover God Wars, Nex, Theatre of Blood and the Inferno. Raids also hand out their own supplies. This table is what I take on an account with 99 Hitpoints.
| Content | What I bring | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Slayer and training | Monkfish, 4 karambwans | Cheap, and karambwans cover the odd bad tick |
| Barrows | Sharks, prayer potions | Prayer runs out before food does |
| Zulrah | Sharks or anglerfish, 4 to 6 karambwans | Eat at the start of a phase, before attacking |
| Vorkath | Sharks or manta rays, 4 karambwans, anglerfish at the bank | Big hits on any tick; start overhealed |
| God Wars Dungeon bosses | Saradomin brews and super restores | Long fights, tank roles |
| Nex | Saradomin brews and super restores | You can cook at the Nex bank fire since 23 September 2026 |
| Chambers of Xeric | Few supplies; cook raid fish inside | Kyren fish heal 23 at 90 Cooking; Xeric's aid (+) is the raid's brew |
| Theatre of Blood | Saradomin brews and super restores | Room after room with no bank |
| Tombs of Amascut | Brews, restores, raid supplies | Nectar and silk dressing come from the raid's supply bag |
| The Gauntlet | Paddlefish, made inside | 20 per fish; crystal paddlefish are the 16-heal combo version |
| TzHaar Fight Caves | 4 to 6 brews, the rest restores or prayer potions | Prayer carries the run |
| Inferno | About 8 brews, 8 super restores | Restores cover Prayer and stats |
| Fortis Colosseum | About 6 brews, 9 super restores, a sanfew serum | 12 waves with no bank; the sanfew covers stats and poison |
| Wilderness bosses | Blighted manta rays and blighted karambwans | Under 100 GP each and only edible in the Wilderness |
For PKing, bring blighted food, brews and karambwans, laid out so a triple eat is always one click away. Blighted food heals like the normal version, costs a fraction of the price, and can only be eaten in the Wilderness and other PvP areas.
Two PKing terms I use: a spec is a special attack, and NH means a fight where both players switch between melee, ranged and magic.
| PK food | Heals at 99 HP | Combo food | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Blighted manta ray | 22 | No | 83 | Main hard food |
| Blighted anglerfish | 22 | No | 74 | Cheapest 22-heal hard food |
| Blighted karambwan | 18 | Yes | 38 | The last click of every combo |
| Saradomin brew (4) | 16 per dose | Sits inside a combo | 7,088 | NH fights and triple eats |
GE prices checked October 2026. You can buy blighted food on the Grand Exchange, or get 15 blighted manta rays for one point at the Last Man Standing shop.
The blighted manta ray is the hard food I carry for PKing. It heals 22 Hitpoints for about 83 GP, about 6% of a normal manta ray's 1,312 GP.

The blighted manta ray opens every triple eat. Losing a stack of them on a Wilderness death costs almost nothing, so I fill the inventory with them instead of sharks.
The blighted anglerfish heals 22 Hitpoints for about 74 GP, the cheapest 22-heal food in the game. The overheal stops once you have been in PvP combat in the last 16 ticks, so in a fight it heals the same as a blighted manta ray.

I eat one before stepping into the Wilderness, while the overheal still works, and treat the rest as manta rays.
The blighted karambwan is the PKing combo food, at 18 Hitpoints for about 38 GP. It always goes last in a double or triple eat.

I carry four to six. Without one, a triple eat becomes a double eat and loses 18 Hitpoints of healing.
In PKing, the Saradomin brew is the middle click of the triple eat, at 16 Hitpoints a dose for 99-Hitpoint players. In NH fights it is also the main food, because four doses fit in one slot.
.webp)
The Defence boost helps you tank, but the -11 to offensive stats per dose lowers your max hit.
PKing food depends on the fight: Saradomin brews are the main food for NH fights, and blighted fish with karambwans cover DH, pure and Wilderness boss fights.
| Fight type | Food | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| NH (switching all three styles) | 7 to 8 Saradomin brews, 4 super restores, 1 or 2 blighted anglerfish and karambwans | Brews are the main food; save the fish for combos |
| DH (Dharok's armour) and melee pure fights | Blighted manta rays or anglerfish, blighted karambwans, 1 or 2 brews | Keep 75 to 85 HP and triple eat after a spec lands |
| Wilderness bossing with PKers about | Blighted manta rays, blighted karambwans | Cheap to lose |
| Free-to-play PvP | Swordfish, anchovy pizza, lobster | No karambwans or brews in F2P |
A triple eat is eating a hard food, a Saradomin brew sip and a combo food in the same game tick. At 99 hitpoints, a shark, brew and karambwan heal 20 + 16 + 18 = 54. A blighted manta ray in place of the shark makes it 56.

All three clicks fit in under 0.6 seconds. Eating three sharks one at a time takes 6 ticks, 3.6 seconds, because of the eat delay.
Every triple eat uses the same order: hard food, then a brew sip, then a combo food. These are the four best, with the heal at 99 Hitpoints.
| Triple eat | Click order | Heals at 99 HP | Attack delay | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shark, brew and karambwan | Shark, brew sip, karambwan | 54 | 5 ticks | Cheapest PvM triple eat |
| Manta ray, brew and karambwan | Manta ray, brew sip, karambwan | 56 | 5 ticks | Most healing with a karambwan |
| Blighted manta ray, brew and blighted karambwan | Blighted manta ray, brew sip, blighted karambwan | 56 | 5 ticks | PKing, 121 GP of food |
| Marlin, brew and halibut | Marlin, brew sip, halibut | 60 | 5 ticks | Biggest heal in one tick |
The triple eat order is hard food, then Saradomin brew, then karambwan. It cannot change.
Check the following GIF to understand the working of triple eat.
If you click the karambwan first, the eat delay blocks the shark after it, and you heal 18 instead of 54. If you click the brew first and the fish second, you get the brew and lose the fish. Halibut works in place of the karambwan.
A triple eat adds 5 ticks to your attack delay: 3 from the hard food and 2 from the karambwan. Jagex used the same figure in its 8 October 2026 Pete Kayer blog. It raised Pete's own delay after eating from 3 ticks to 5 to match a player's triple eat.
Put the brew in one fixed slot with a hard food and a karambwan next to it, so the three clicks sit in one short line. As you eat through the fight, drag your remaining food around the brew so a triple eat is always ready.

Use the same layout every trip. Your hand learns where the triple is, and you never have to look away from the fight to find it.
Triple eat after the first hit of a combo lands, not before it. If you triple eat at 75 Hitpoints the moment your opponent's spec weapon appears, you only reach full health. Then you take the whole combo with no food timer left.
Against a granite maul combo, I sit at 75 to 85 Hitpoints, tank the first maul hits, and triple eat before the next hit.
Whoever attacks first on a tick, known as PID, also changes your timing. When your opponent has PID, their hits land sooner, so you may only have time for a double eat.
Pete Kayer's Challenges, added at Ferox Enclave on 7 October 2026, include a combo eating trainer. It hits you with an Armadyl godsword and a dark bow special attack and asks you to double or triple eat on the right tick. It also has an endless mode for practice.

You can set your own food layout before each attempt, so practise with the inventory you PK with. The first Combo Eating completion pays 100 blighted manta rays and 50 blighted karambwans. The challenges also pay Pete's vouchers, up to 25. You need the easy Wilderness Diary and 750 total level for the rewards.
In PKing, brew when you need the heal and restore when your Prayer drops near 30. Your offensive stats can wait, but losing protection prayers loses the fight.
Keep your Prayer at 30 or more. If you run low, you have to drink a restore instead of a brew, and you lose the triple eat on that tick. A Smite on you drains a quarter of every hit you take from your Prayer, so your Prayer drains faster than in PvM.
For PKing I bring one restore for every two brews. That is fewer than in PvM, because a PK fight lasts seconds, not a whole trip. The extra slots go to food for triple eats.
Blighted super restores cost about 2,878 GP, against 10,390 GP for a normal one. They work the same but only in PvP areas, so I bring blighted restores to every PK trip.
Drink your restore on a tick where you are not attacking or eating, like straight after your own special attack. A restore sip mid-combo costs you the brew slot of a triple eat. A restore sip after your spec costs you nothing.
The best F2P food in OSRS is the swordfish, at 14 Hitpoints for about 230 GP. Anchovy pizza is the fast-eating food, and the jug of wine is the cheapest healing in the game.

Best F2P food in OSRS: swordfish heals 14 Hitpoints for about 230 GP
| Food | Heals (HP) | Price (GP, checked October 2026) | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Swordfish | 14 | 230 | Best single heal in F2P |
| Anchovy pizza | 9 per bite, 18 total | 600 | 1-tick first bite for fast eats |
| Lobster | 12 | 102 | Cheap all-round food |
| Jug of wine | 11 | 3 | Training food; lowers Attack by 2 |
| Cake | 4 per bite, 12 total | 94 | Cheap filler with 2-tick bites |
GE prices checked October 2026.
Free-to-play has no karambwans or brews, so F2P players use pseudo combo eating. The first bite of an anchovy pizza has a 1-tick eat delay. Eat the first bite, then a swordfish on the next tick, for 9 + 14 = 23 Hitpoints in 2 ticks.

Three first bites of anchovy pizza heal 27 in the time one swordfish takes, so I keep three whole pizzas for emergencies.
The easiest food for an ironman is potato with cheese, which the Warriors' Guild food shop sells for 9 GP each. It heals 16 Hitpoints in one bite. Karambwans are the combo food from 65 Fishing, and from 82 Fishing, minnows trade for raw sharks.
Best food for ironmen in OSRS: potato with cheese for 9 GP at the Warriors' Guild, karambwans from 65 Fishing, sharks from minnows at 82 Fishing
The Warriors' Guild needs 130 combined Attack and Strength, or 99 in either. The shop holds 10 at a time and restocks over time, so I hop worlds to buy in bulk.

Karambwans need 65 Fishing and the Tai Bwo Wannai Trio quest. They heal 18 and go last in every combo eat, so I bring them on every trip.
Minnows are the easiest way to stock sharks. From 82 Fishing, Kylie Minnow's platform in the Fishing Guild trades 40 minnows for one raw shark. You need the full angler's outfit and the Fishing Contest quest to get on.
At 82 Fishing that is about 375 raw sharks an hour, and cooking them needs 80 Cooking. Bluefin and marlin come later from Sailing, and tuna potatoes give 22 Hitpoints at 68 Cooking for an account with low Fishing.
An ironman cannot buy a single shark, so every one of those 82 Fishing levels comes from your own clicks. If you would rather spend that time bossing, we can train Fishing on your ironman with the same karambwan and minnow methods.
I stock monkfish and karambwans for training, sharks and karambwans for bossing, then brews and marlin for the hardest content.
| Budget per trip | Main food | Combo food | Price per fish (GP, checked October 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Under 5K | Monkfish | Cooked karambwan | 150 and 385 |
| 5K to 30K | Shark | Cooked karambwan | 928 and 385 |
| 30K to 60K | Manta ray or bluefin | Cooked karambwan | 1,312 or 1,732, and 385 |
| 60K and up | Saradomin brews and super restores, or marlin | Halibut | 7,088 per brew, 3,882 per marlin, 2,184 per halibut |
| Wilderness | Blighted manta ray | Blighted karambwan | 83 and 38 |
GE prices checked October 2026.
The marlin is the best food in OSRS by healing, at 24 Hitpoints per bite for about 3,882 GP. For value, the shark heals 20 for about 928 GP. The Saradomin brew heals the most per inventory slot, 64 Hitpoints per potion at 99 Hitpoints, but it drains your Attack, Strength, Ranged and Magic.
To double eat in OSRS, click a hard food like a shark, then a karambwan, in the same game tick. At 99 Hitpoints that heals 38 at once and adds 5 ticks to your attack delay. The karambwan must come second. A brew sip followed by a karambwan also works, with only 2 ticks of delay.
The triple eat order in OSRS is hard food first, then a Saradomin brew sip, then a karambwan, all in one game tick. At 99 Hitpoints, a shark, brew and karambwan heals 54. Any other order fails, because the karambwan must come last. A triple eat adds 5 ticks to your attack delay.
Use Saradomin brews in long fights where healing per slot matters more than damage, like God Wars, Nex, Theatre of Blood, the Inferno and the Colosseum. Each dose heals 16 at 99 Hitpoints and lowers offensive stats. One super restore dose undoes the drain from three brew doses.
Anglerfish is better than shark for starting a fight, because it heals 22 at 93+ Hitpoints and can overheal you to 121. Shark is better value, at 20 Hitpoints for about 928 GP against 1,625 GP. The anglerfish overheal does not work in PvP combat, so in the Wilderness it is a plain 22-heal fish.
The swordfish is the best F2P food in OSRS, healing 14 Hitpoints for about 230 GP. Anchovy pizza heals 9 per bite and its first bite has a 1-tick eat delay. That lets you eat a pizza bite and then a swordfish on the next tick, for 23 Hitpoints in 2 ticks.
