OSRS Rune Mysteries Quest Guide: Full Beginner Walkthrough

Rune Mysteries is a beginner-friendly quest that unlocks access to the Rune Essence Mine and lets players use XP lamps and books on the Runecrafting skill. With no requirements, it’s perfect for new players and Ironman accounts looking to start Runecrafting early. Completing this quest is also required for Temple of Ikov, which unlocks the Guardian of the Rift   minigame, known for its unique rewards—so it’s worth knocking out early. 

Difficulty: Easy 

Length: Short
Time to complete: Around 3 minutes if you have teleports. Without them, expect a few extra minutes of running.

General Questing Tips

• Enable RuneLite Quest Helper (RuneLite → Plugins → Quest Helper).
• Hold space bar to breeze through dialogue.
• Use number keys for faster chat selections.
   

Recommended Items (Optional but Helpful)

I highly recommend getting all the teleports you’ll need before starting. It saves you from running back and forth to the bank and makes the quest feel much faster. Here’s what I usually take:

Travel to Lumbridge (start and end)

• Lumbridge Teleport

• Home Teleport

Travel to Varrock (Aubury)

• Varrock Teleport

• Chronicle

Travel to Wizard’s Tower (Sedridor, two trips)

• Necklace of Passage

• Amulet of Glory → Draynor Village (for members)

Personally, I always prep my teleports like this—it feels way smoother and saves a ton of time, especially if you’re going for a fast completion.

Rune Mysteries Walkthrough

Start the Quest in Lumbridge Castle

Go to Lumbridge Castle and head upstairs to the first floor. I usually take the south stairs, but the north stairs work just as well—choose whichever you like.

• Speak with Duke Horacio. Choose options 1 → 1 to begin. He’ll give you an Air Talisman. 

Tip: You can get more by dropping it and talking to the Duke again.

Deliver the Talisman to Archmage Sedridor

Recommended: Necklace of passage and Varrock teleport or chronicle (to start next section)

Teleport to the Wizard’s Tower using a Necklace of Passage. You can see its location on the map above. It’s close enough to Lumbridge that you can simply run there if you don’t have a Necklace of Passage.

Once inside:

• Climb down to the basement
• Enter the south below and talk to Archmage Sedridor (dialogue 1 → 1 → 1)

He’ll take the talisman and give you a Research Package for Aubury in Varrock.

Visit Aubury in Varrock

• Teleport using Varrock teleport tablet, spellbook, Chronicle or run to Varrock.
• Aubury is found in his Rune Shop, south of Varrock’s East Bank. Take note of this shop, especially if you’re an Ironman—it stocks different types of runes, from low-level ones to high-level runes like Death Runes.

Talk to him and choose dialogue 2. He’ll hand you some Research Notes to bring back to Sedridor.

Return to the Wizard’s Tower

Go back to the Wizard’s Tower basement and speak with Archmage Sedridor one final time. He’ll explain the basics of Runecraft, return your Air Talisman, and complete the quest.
