OSRS Sheep Herder Quest Guide: Easy Steps for Beginner

OSRS Sheep Herder Quest Guide: Easy Steps for Beginner

Sheep Herder is a short but tricky quest in the Elf questline. Your task is simple: round up four infected sheep, poison them, and burn their bones to prevent a plague from spreading through Ardougne. The challenge lies in herding the sheep — they have a mind of their own and love to wander off.

General Questing Tips

  • Enable RuneLite Quest Helper to keep track of objectives.
  • Hold the spacebar to skip dialogue.
  • Use number keys to quickly select chat options.

Time to Complete: Roughly 9–14 minutes, depending on how cooperative the sheep are.

Requirements

  • No skill, quest, or special item requirements.
  • 100 coins for the plague jacket and trousers.

Recommendations

  • Ardougne teleport or 30 GP to take boat from Rimmington to Ardougne to start the quest
  • Bring stamina potions; they make herding far easier than you’d expect.

Walkthrough of Sheep Herder

  • Teleport to Ardougne or take a boat there from Rimmington then go talk to Councillor Halgrive outside the East Ardougne church (see map below).
  • Choose chat option 1 to agree to help. He’ll then send you to Doctor Orbon inside the church

  • Head over to Doctor Orbon and buy the plague jacket and trousers for 100 coins.

Herding the Sick Sheep

  • Equip the plague clothing then go to the enclosure north of Ardougne and pick up the cattleprod shown in the image below.

Now you need to herd the different-coloured sheep into the enclosure. Just get close to a sheep and left-click to prod it while you’re holding the cattle prod to push it in the direction you want. Your goal is simply to guide each sheep close enough to the gate—once it’s near, it’ll walk into the pen on its own.

Herding tips that helped me:

  • When the sheep shouts “BAAAAA!”, it moves in the direction you pushed it.

  • If it just says “Baa”, it’s resetting and running back to where it started.

  • I find it easiest to stand directly behind the sheep and spam-click to keep it moving forward.

  • If a sheep gets stuck on a wall or corner, step around it, line yourself up again, and prod it from behind.

  • Make sure the sheep fully enters the pen—some stop one tile short and turn around if you’re not careful.

It’s a bit janky at first, but once you get the hang of it, it’s pretty straightforward.

Sheep Locations

The location of each sheep is shown in the images below.

  • Red Sheep: North of East Ardougne’s northern bank.

  • Green Sheep: North-east of the red one, above the fenced area with fallen trees.

  • Blue Sheep: North-west of the incinerator enclosure, near a small warrior camp. Don’t wander too far west — level 42 moss giants will ruin your day.

  • Yellow Sheep: Just south of the Fishing Guild.

Killing and Disposing

  • After herding each coloured sheep into the enclosure, use the poisoned sheep food on each sheep to kill it—they’ll drop bones when they die.

  • Pick up the bones and use them on the incinerator to dispose of them.

Once that’s done, head back to Councillor Halgrive to finish up the quest.

Congratulations! You have completed Sheep herder.

Rewards from the Sheep Herder

  • 4 Quest Points
  • 3,100 coins
  • Required to start Mourning’s End Part I.

Since you are already in Ardougne, Some other easy quests to do there are: Plague city, Biohazard, monk’s friend or the tower of life. They are quite easy and give decent rewards.
